Yeah, the Sonys I know for sure do what I said re: outputting 4:3 inside a 16:9 container with player-led black bars, hence when you do anything OSD-related it still looks exactly like it would when playing 16:9 material.

Australia is the musical continent, the place of music talents, artists in good sound, rock audiophiles. That's why you're getting the 9000, AC⚡DC

Canada has the 820 (same list price as in USA, in Cdn loonies), but no 9000 (unless you buy it from another country).
* For Panasonic OLED TVs the 820 is perfect. For audiophiles the Oppo 205 was perfect. It would be sweet to buy the Panasonic 9000 from the USA. _____ ![]() Last edited by LordoftheRings; 10-17-2018 at 01:28 AM. |

So sad to hear the UB9000 may not be coming to the States. We need a proper replacement for the Oppo 205. I don't have 4K hardware yet......my tax return will see to that, but I've been buying 4K discs. I have an Oppo 105D and was shocked as many were when Oppo called it quits. I was counting on this Panasonic to be the replacement when I make the move. I hope it still happens as tax time is a few months away. I don't know how the Panasonic UB820 or the Sony UBP-X1000ES compare to the audio quality I have from my Oppo. I haven't looked at those two other offerings yet. Perhaps the UB9000 will come to the States under another model number? Perhaps another brand will make a deal and slap their name on it, even though it'll basically be a Panasonic? I don't know.....

It's weird, the STATUS pop-up stays the same geometry - it just moves more to the centre, but the PLAYBACK INFO pop-up gets squished. So I'm not sure if that could be fixed with a future update?

I was thinking of picking up the 820, I know a big perk is the HDR optimizer. I would be using on a JVC projector that I had professionally calibrated. would I even need to use the optimizer settings then in this player? Or would they enhance mms settings a bit more. thanks

I have a Samsung 65 inch UN65MU8000FXZA with their HW-M550/ZA sound bar. I'm going region free and was thinking about going with a region free Samsung UBD-M9500 priced with a 3 year ext warranty at 470 or should I go with this UB 820? In anyone's opinion that has went region free or have had both players?

If you select SDR2020 output, the low nit LCD/projector setting doesn't do anything. That is only used if you are outputting HDR and using the optimizer (as it defines the brightness of the tone map).

Have you used the optimizer with your 885ES and if so, did you happen to do a comparison between outputting HDR as opposed to SDR2020? Forgive my ignorance but for some reason I still seem to prefer using HDR rather than SDR2020 with my 385ES (and also with my previous 285ES). For starters I couldn't notice any noticable difference which would make the picture less good when using HDR instead of SDR2020. The menu also states that when putting out SDR2020, the optimizer does not function. I also prefer using the HDR brightness slider instead of the "regular" brightness slider when outputting SDR2020. Perhaps it's just the placebo effect? If I'm not mistaken I think you mentioned earlier in this thread that having the player do the tone mapping on top of the projector's is not a good idea? I'm not doubting your expertise here, not at all! It's just that I would like to know which things would be better looking when doing SDR2020 instead of HDR. Thanks. ![]() |

I agree that we need a "proper" replacement for the Oppo 205 -- and I thought that was going to be the Cambridge Audio player...however, there seems to be something off with regard to their stock of that deck, and I was put off by the fact that the player won't support HDR10+ (which my Samsung panel can, even though there is no physical media support for the format as of yet)… I want a solid Oppo-like build quality but at a price point of between $500 and $700 U.S., so it's probably gonna be the 820 for me (even though it doesn't boast the Oppo build)... |

I gotta say...all this talk in this thread about the 820's functioning and available setup parameters seems ridiculously daunting...I hope it's not that difficult to set up once received...
Are there general "auto" settings that can be applied across the board for those of us who don't want to fool around that deeply with parameters? Would "auto" settings deliver 2160 resolution to a display, ensuring Blu-ray, DVD AND UHD all get passed at 2160? The noise reduction circuits on this player are another thing -- I've seen images of the NR menu for the 820, and it seems there are multiple "sliders" that can be adjusted for different kinds of noise suppression...I happen to be one of the few enthusiasts who prefer using NR, especially for DVD playback, but what would ideal settings for the 820's NR look like? |

The Panasonic UB820 costs $50 less. You not going to find a Oppo-like build quality since you don't have UHD BD player vendors selling factory direct any more. You have to live with what is available now in store and select retailers like value electronics, and paying twice as much ($999) if you want more of a audiophile player. |
