You don’t HAVE to play with all the settings, y’know.

Also that’s why calibrators can’t only be certified and be done. I recertify myself every a couple of years. Plus I received training from Technicolor and individual display companies to know more about their displays.

Yes, you are reading too much, making life complicated for what it shouldn't be.
Having picture adjustments is good, very. I'd rather have more than enough where true matter counts...picture quality, than not enough. In this 4K business the Panasonic HDR Optimizer is a terrific feature, one that makes people universally happy. We are on 4K HDR picture heaven, finally, everyone. The best is yet to come.

so here's a question. One thing that's so irritating about changing video settings on my 2 current players is that you have to stop the movie, make what you think will be a better setting, and then start the movie back up to see if it works or not.

With the Panasonic-- can you adjust the settings (luminance level, etc) while the movie is playing?

"One of the UB820's flagship features is the much ballyhooed HDR Optimizer, which enables the user to toggle between four HDR brightness settings - Standard, Natural Environment, Light Environment, and Bright Environment - on the fly to optimize HDR impact in both dark and light-filled viewing spaces. This is a very welcome feature, as HDR can sometimes appear muddy when certain discs are viewed on certain displays. Rather than spend a lot of time adjusting brightness and contrast levels, the HDR Optimizer allows you to sample various settings quickly and easily. The gradations are subtle yet noticeable.

Video adjustments were easy to make while watching the various movies (although the preset levels are so good, not much tinkering is necessary). While the more complex adjustment overlays take up a bit too much of the display's real estate, if you click on the individual component, the menu disappears and an adjustment slider bar pops up on the bottom of the screen so you can easily eyeball the alterations."

The HDR Optimizer is right there on the remote so its easy to use.
You don't have to stop the movie or anything. Just press the button and arrow between the different 4 presets.
And if you hold down on the button you can tweak the settings even more. I don't know what I did without it.

Even watching a very dark like Solo in a bright room becomes an easy adjustment within seconds.

All this complex operation rhetoric is one of the things keeping me away from the UB820, AKORIS; I don't know if all UHD disc players are like this, but it seems too daunting just to get a disc up and running correctly (and ensuring the settings are correct for your particular display).

All players have default settings that just work. No one needs to experiment with advance settings and read numerous online forum comments to be able to use a player. Your TV doesn't run that way, why expect the player to be worse?

The Panasonic UB900 I have detected my display. I can't imagine the UB820 being any different. You should be able to just plug in and play.

There is one other thing you can do and its really easy.
Go to the Setup icon on the far right.
Click the button on "Player Settings".
Then under HDMI press the button.
Press the arrow key down to the "Advanced settings"
Under advanced settings arrow down five times to
"HDR TV Type"
Then click on either
OLED
Super High Luminance LCD
Middle or High Luminance LCD
or Basic Luminance LCD and projector.

Also most of my region 2 discs work with ease aside from some German and French imports.
Just hit top menu when it doesn't play. Sometimes you don't even need to press stop.

Does anyone know if these have the subtitle luminance control, like the UB900 has?

The 820/824 does, I take it the 9000 would too.

Yes diable the TV's tone mapping. The player does a better (more accurate) tone mapping when compared to lg's. The tone mapping on the LG tends to boost image brightness too much. With the Panasonic you can also customize it to your own liking. For example you can boost the shadow details while preserving everything else. As I find hdr10 tends to be on the darker side when compared to Dolby vision.

So only subtitles are dimmed in HDR? Clever.

Definitely. I just still don’t know how to set subtitle luminance to 50% as a default.

How do you disable the TV's tone mapping? Do you just put the HDR optimizer to on?

Yeah, and you can change the luminace yourself. Comes in handy with some (dark) movies on UHD which have too bright subtitles such as John Wick 2 (at least they are too bright to my eyes on the UK release).
