Just so Steedeel, doesn’t get the wrong impression with the above ^ post.

In order to allay your fears, stee, optical disc technology isn’t disappearing anytime soon, in fact, it is progressing forward on the professional level related to storage…

Regardless, like I said, I’ll give it a few days before I comment upon what happened (unexpectedly) during the principal photography of the scene in the movie. Maybe by doing so, I’ll be doing my humble role in helping sell a few more copies of another catalog title before it disappears into oblivion like a depth charge which never went off.
I just read page 169 as well as a few pages on either side. The target was streamed at 1 nautical mile, (about 1.15 miles), so, over 2000 yds.

Wouk was an officer assigned to the USS Zane from 1943 to 1945. I believe the cable cutting incident may have actually happened while on the Zane. The Zane was assigned to towing duty during that period (1944). The grounding definitely happened. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Zane_(DD-337)
In June 1949, Wouk went as a reserve officer on a training cruise aboard the aircraft carrier Saipan, and while on board started writing The Caine Mutiny.

There were a number of anomalies during filming.
[Show spoiler]For example, the scene on the aircraft carrier elevator when jets were shown on the hanger deck.

http://www.moviemistakes.com/film3480.http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046816/goofs

While I like WW II movies, this isn't one of them. Too negative for me. Das Boot or Run Silent Run Deep are better psychological studies in my opinion.

So fess up. What happened during the filming of the cable cutting scene?

^ Keep in mind that the target was essentially a big steel floating platform with a steel target mounted on top. Anyway, after the towline to the target was cut and the ship circled back with cameras rolling -

Take 1 –
[Show spoiler]The ship missed the target by over 200 yards which was much too far away for a dramatic effect in the movie , therefore, the Captain promised to maneuver closer on a second try. So, the ship circled back again toward the target for

Take 2 –
[Show spoiler]with the cameras rolling again. This time – it was readily apparent to the cinematographer and other filmmakers onboard as well as the Captain, officers and men on the bridge that the ship was looking like it not only was going to get closer to the target this time around compared to Take 1 but that it might very well hit the target, so the Captain ordered starboard engines full ahead and port engines full astern, which was actually opposite to what should have been the order. To make a long story short, one corner of the steel floating platform of the target grazed the ship, stripping off paint along the entire side of the hull. Later on, after the incident, the XO told the filmmakers that with a few less inches of clearance, not only would some paint had been stripped off but, that the target’s steel platform would have sliced open the ship’s thin skin in a manner akin to something like a sushi knife cutting through a warm bar of butter.

On a future Blu-ray movie offering note, well, it was supposed to be a large steel plate positioned in place by the special effects supervisor to protect the hull but, despite best intentions and assurances, special effects can sometimes go embarrassingly wrong and actually result in a navy boat being holed.

I’ll postpone that story as to exactly how that happened for when another WW II classic soon debuts on Blu-ray. Maybe raygendreau will purchase that one.

Someone asked in a PM for me to do a post on the Star Wars Blu-ray.
Probably everything that possibly can be said, has already been said by the younger folks as well as the 40-ish year old folks in the blogosphere, except possibly for this, Ergo…..

[QUOTE=Penton-Man;5223240]^ "Keep in mind that the target was essentially a big steel floating platform with a steel target mounted on top. Anyway, after the towline to the target was cut and the ship circled back with cameras rolling -"

Huh??. What were they using for a target? The biggest risk was tipping the target over while turning. I have never seen a target with a steel superstructure. They are constructed using wood battens. A 1,600 ton Destroyer (Thompson) could have run over a towed sled (5 ton) without a pause and probably without much, if any damage. The largest Battleship towed target was only 28 tons.

"The target for most gunnery exercises was a sled towed by another battleship, a tug, or a destroyer. As the figure below shows, a wide variety of targets was employed, the largest being towed on 172-foot long battle rafts. For long range practices, potential targets larger than a light cruiser were represented by a 140 foot by 40 foot "battle rafts" made up of light wood battens (which allowed "overs" to be spotted through the mesh). Destroyers were represented by a 140 x 20 foot screen. For short range practices, a wide variety of "sled" or "high speed" targets were used. The largest of these, the PSAO, displaced 28 tons, and carried three 25-foot square target screens. The target screen for 5-inch short range practices was typically 15 feet square with a 6 foot bulls-eye at the center; from 3,000 yards, almost every shot was expected to hit the screen"

Couldn’t tell you. Perhaps the target was manufactured as a one-off motion picture prop rather than being a functional target typical for naval gunnery exercises? Perhaps there were targets actually built with a steel framework….. of which you are just not aware?

I’m not here to debate the accuracy of the information with you, as it is from a reputable eye-witness accounting of the event. Maybe doing a search of the writings of Commander James C. Shaw (the technical advisor for the film) would shed further light on the topic.

Not sure why they would use a prop, given the Navy was providing access to equipment. Anyway, here's the real thing (5" mount firing at a towed target) GO NAVY! http://www.myspace.com/video/vid/33028854

Here is an image of the target used in the film. It is a wooden sled with a flimsy latticework support for the canvas target. It weighs around 2 tons.

My conclusion is the XO of the destroyer was having a bit of fun with your reputable observor. No debate required. The wooden raft used in the film could not "slice through" the 3/4" steel upper hull of a WW II Destroyer. The claim just doesn't hold water.

I was referring to the paranoia and the accompanying commentary.

If you stop to ask, I think you'll find that everyone here is of the "Blu-ray is neato!" persuasion.
