Simply from a cold, calculating business standpoint (and it aint called the motion picture business for nothing), history has shown that the surest way to get people into the movies is to offer them something they are familiar with. Until the theater going public changes that mindset, don’t expect this sort of thing to go away. Which is another reason why cinephiles who embrace diversified content should support the offerings from outfits like Fox Searchlight Pictures and, of course – https://forum.blu-ray.com/blu-ray-mo...ml#post5020949 |

I don't think you understand, Penton (and I wouldn't expect you to). The closest thing in my life to "spiritual" content is Blade Runner. If this movie ends up happening, I don't know if it'll be good and I don't know if it'll be bad and, to some degree, I'm not sure that I care. Whatever becomes of it, though, it's a bit of an event for me, in more ways than one, and I'm still wrapping my mind around this new paradigm.
Speaking of events- you rest up, mister! ![]() |

Now before I start, I would like to point out one thing, even though it is not relevant to my point, this is the same guy that wrote DVD demystified and, as far as I know, has no extra secret information that we don't. The reason I bring it up is that in the presentation linked by PM the UV representative definitely said there will be 5 classes if you look at that table he has 3 (HD,SD and PD) and if you look at the resolutions there are more then 5 (2xHD+2xSD+3PD=7). But for the sake of argument let's assume it is right, since my point was never that his info is wrong. now can you tell me where he talks about 2D in that table? doesn't 1920x1080, 23.976Hz DTS-HD MA apply equally well to 2D as it does 3D, I know I have some BDs with those exact specs 3D 1080p24. so someone could just as easily say 2D isn't in the list of supported video formats of Ultraviolet according to the page linked in this thread. If it isn't in the list of supported formats, that seems like you won't be able to stream/download Ultraviolet 2D content until it gets added to the Ultraviolet specs (if ever) if it isn't already. do you see how ridiculous that sounds? saying it can't have 3D because of that table is just as ridiculous if you think about it. Like I pointed out before, that table has resolution and 3D/2D has nothing to do with that, it has refresh rate just as immaterial, and it has sound and subtitles, even more immaterial. None of it deals with content, and to jump to any conclusion on content (which is what we are talking about with 2D vs 3D) shows personal bias more then anything in that table. Now why do I think it is more likely to have 3D then not to have it? simple. UV is brought to us by DECE. Who is DECE? a consortium of studios (who want us to watch 3D movies), CEs (who want us to buy 3D equipment) and retailers (who want us to buy 3D movies and equipment from them), network hardware vendors (that don't give a crap but maybe more BW will mean more spending with them so I guess they would not be against it) and (DRM) vendors (who don't care either way). Add to it that UV is supposedly the future and that some of the UV content providers already offer 3D and that 3D is not treated as spec but as content and this shows there is an extremely good chance that it will support 3D. Does it make sense to you that you that Vudu has RE:A 2D http://www.vudu.com/movies/#!content...Evil-Afterlife and 3D http://www.vudu.com/movies/#reviews/...l-Afterlife-3D now on their site but when UV launches a) you will be able to buy the 2D as part of UV but not the 3D b) you will be able to buy from VUDU RE:A 2D but as soon as UV launches they won't offer the 3D any more (since they will get their Sony movies from UV and so won’t get RE:A) c) that 3D and 2D are treated as different films (as they are now on Vudu) and you will be able to get the one you want in the format you want (i.e. HD, SD....). for me clearly c makes a lot more sense then to assume UV will be a step backwards. And how about UV BD? Does it make sense for someone to say I will buy a 3D laptop (which are on the market) and when he feels like bringing a 2D movie he will use the UV copy but for 3D he will have to bring the disk? Sure makes the idea of digital means portability everywhere appear like a joke And what if someone decides with UV “I can now build completely legally a movie server” does it make sense that with his 2D content he can use it in the HT but with his 3D content he will have to buy/use BD? Sure makes the server idea appear like a mistake. In my opinion assuming 3D won’t be supported in UV is assuming that complete morons are behind DECE and UV. |

Well whether it supports 3D or not, in picture quality terms I'd say it will be a step backwards.

Of course it will be a step backwards. No doubt in my mind, how can it be anything else. This is the future all home cinema enthusiasts face. I am mocked for saying so, but i will stick by my guns. Too much optimism by some forum members. Backwards step is the verdict from me.

With streaming I agree the infrastructure wont be here for a long time, with DL (none-live copying from the server) it might be easier but it won't be able to compete for the time being, but MC from the disk, there is no technical reason why someone that does not mind wasting 30GB,40GB,50GB per movie on a server that the quality can't be 100% the same. Also let's not forget UV is in essence just registration management. Joe bought X in 1080p, there is nothing to do with quality in that. Let's think of streaming for a second (to keep it simple) if today, I think we all agree, they can't offer BD quality, that does not mean that in 20 years they can't offer BD quality through streaming. So watching it today streaming it might not be BD quality and a step backwards but when you stream it again in 20 years maybe they will be BD quality, after all, all that is known is that you have a right to watch it on your 12 devices at 1080p. |

So, I keep my appt. with my Surgeon on Friday and while in the examining room the first thing I say to him is “I just dropped in to see what ….
After which, I nearly fall out of my chair when he responds with “Sometimes you eat the bar and sometimes the bar, well, it eats you!” ![]() |

“The Program Saturday. August 20”…… http://www.amianet.org/events/theree...11/program.htm The surprise screening was the new restoration of Monty Python and the Holy Grail. ![]() But I didn’t forget about commenting in a whimsical way about “20,000 Leagues” back in March - https://forum.blu-ray.com/insider-di...ml#post4507580 b.t.w., for those who were unable to attend and view the new restoration of A Trip to the Moon at this year’s The Reel Thing, there is a second chance alternative possible for locals…. http://www.oscars.org/events-exhibit...p-to-moon.html And for videophiles who don’t give a hoot about real old silent movies by some French Director they’ve probably never even heard of having the name Georges Méliès … well, for some historical perspective on the subject, Ben Kingsley plays Georges Méliès in Marty Scorsese’s Hugo (in 3D) due out later this year…. http://drnorth.wordpress.com/2010/12...n-hugo-cabret/ |

On a side note, for those not interested in learning about which I think was the very first science fiction motion picture (A Trip to the Moon), well, fast forward a little over a century to see some science non-fiction from space, in the comfort of your own home….

Sorry to go waaay off topic...but I just wanted to say that I experienced my first earthquake! Granted I was about 70-80 miles north of the epicenter, but WOW...what a feeling of being totally powerless.
Anyway, just thought I'd share...probably not that big of deal for all the West Coast folks(Culver City Brigands included)! ![]() |

Glad to hear you're, at least, okay enough to make a posting! Great movie! As a matter of fact, I'll be meeting up with a buddy of mine tomorrow(Irene permitting) who's an ex-Army Ranger and was there in Mogadishu('93 the First Battle). He got me a signed copy of Mike Durant's book Company of Heroes(Which I gave to my Dad, retired military). Since you brought it up( ![]() ![]() |

Or do what I did when the East Coast Earthquake hit: Watch the Director's Cut of Das Boot! I did that and all the extras in ONE sitting. A great way to spend 8 hours of a little down time!
Fantastic BD release! I can't recommend this enough! |
