I was just curious about this as it popped in my head as I was putting a Blu-ray back on my shelf. How do you organize your movies? To be more specific, if you have multiple movies in a franchise that start with different letters, how do you organize them? I myself go by the first movie in the franchise. For instance, Dark Knight will sit side by side with Batman Begins as Quantum of Solace will sit beside Casino Royale. Some sequels are just numbered and are easily placed, but how do the rest of you handle non alphabetical sequels?

I generally sort alphabetically, even with sequels. So Quantum of Solace will be in the Q section. The only time I don't sort by movie title is if it's a box set in which case it gets sorted alphabetically by whatever is the name of the Box set, i.e. Bond Blu-ray collections 1&2 are aphabetized under Bond. TV Series, Documentaries and PS3 games have seperate sections also alphabetized.

I sort alphabetically unless they are in a box set, then I keep the box together.
Also, I generally sort by the first word other than "A" or "The". So "The Terminator" would be under Te, not Th. There are exceptions to this rule though, and that is when the title makes more sense with the word. Examples of this are "A League of Their Own" and "The Day After Tomorrow". I keep the numbered movies first before the letter A begins: 007 Box Sets, 12 Monkeys, 300, 3:10 to Uma, 41 Year Old Virgin... Casino Royale is not under 007, but under 'C'. Maybe I should change that. My Blu-ray and DVDs are mixed. I do not separate by type, although I have thought about it. I also do not sort out the Warner digibooks. It makes my collection look mismatched, but at least I can find a movie I want to watch pretty easily. I keep ALL slipsleeves on, all boxes and special packaging stays, and no stickers come off unless it was on the plastic wrap. If there is a piece of paper with info on it, such as those on the back of the Warner digibooks, the Godfather collections, the Matrix collection, etc. then I take those, fold them in half nicely, and then slip them inside the packaging. I tried my best to keep them actually stuck to the packaging, but the more I pull the movies out the more they came off, so I just said screw it and folded it all up. I am anal about the originality of the piece, as if it's artwork. I also goo-be-gone every spec of stickering that may be left over from when I originally got the item. Most I don't need to do this with, but some I do. I also have a TV section after my movies for things like Star Trak and MASH, as well as a section for my kids for movies like Muppet's and Garfield/Charlie Brown TV Specials, etc. I also have a Wii, PS3, and personal home movies sections as well. Unfortunately for me, "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" will be separated until a box set comes out. The same was true with "Die Hard" and "Live Free or Die Hard" until I got the box set. Can't have it both ways. Ethan Last edited by ethanwa; 11-26-2008 at 06:34 AM. |

I do mine alphabetically with sequels in order regardless of alphabetical order. Series are done by alpabetical order of the series, like Bond is done as B versus C for Casino Royale, and then order of release. I got into this habit with books where you have large series by the same author and you look for the author and then the books in order, and it just crossed over to movies.

I do the same. I find it more aesthetically pleasing to sort this way. I can always find my movies fine.

I do a basic sort based on target audience in the house and then use various sub-categories themes..
kids movies at the bottom, sub sorted into things like Disney (THAT takes space I'll tell ya) which gets divided into classic cartoons, modern cartoons, Pixar and then other misc movies, Dreamworks has a shelf, Star Wars, then a lot of miscellaneous areas.. dinosaurs, animation, veggietales etc.. Wife has a small area for her movies, no sorting other than I want that goopy stuff away from my stuff ![]() Don't know why, but that's how I likes it ![]() |

I keep going back and forth on that. For a while I had everything alphabetized no matter if it was part of a collection or not. So, Live Free or Die Hard was under L not D. Then I started grouping things so that Live Free or Die Hard was considered Die Hard 4. The problem for me, is that when thinking of it, I always seem to pick the opposite of the way I have it. So, if I've got Live Free or Die Hard under the D's, my first instinct will be to look in the L's and vice-versa. So, it seems to be a no-win situation for me. The Bond movies are another example. I'd prefer to have them all together but I kept looking in the wrong section when doing that.
Also, for a while I had the documentaries, TV shows and special interest type blu-rays separate from the movies but now I've got everything together in alphabetical order. |

I do the same thing I did with DVDs because I have so many DVDs, they will get "lost" if I don't figure out what I've seen recently...........
So here's what I do.... I keep T.V. series and Music/concert discs together.... (not an issue for me right now with blu-ray, but I have probably 80+ Concert/music DVDs, so it became an issue there) Then... for the rest of the movies, other than "Sagas" or boxed sets like Friday the 13th etc.... I put the most recently watched movies to the bottom/Left most point on the shelves....... so over time, if I check the top/right most sections, I know what movies I haven't seen in a long time ![]() All the shelves were in a closet in a spare room... for space/asthetic reasons ![]() |

alphabetically for me regardless of movies like The Dark Knight or Quantom of Solace. that way if u want a movie, there's no guessing on where it is.
i have contemplated organizing by genre and then alphabetically but have never made the commitment to reorganize almost 400 movies. ![]() |

I think sorting in alphabetical order is the way to go, but I do keep my concert BD's seperate from movies. And I think I do so because those are the ones I watch most often.
As ones collection grows it makes sense to organize in a format that suits you for easier and quicker selection of what you want to watch. Hell, if I didn't have my extensive LP collection organized in some fashion (alphabetical by artist), it'd take me forever to find a particular album. Bottom line....organization is good! |
