I have nearly perfect vision and I had to strain to see the difference. Is that worth paying $15? Absolutely not. http://caps-a-holic.com/hd_vergleich...ss=1#vergleich The upgrade is clear with Ghostbusters, Glory, Men in Black, Spider-man, and Spider-man 2. The rest are either negligible (like Taxi Driver and Battle: Los Angeles) or indistinguishable (like Total Recall and The Other Guys).

Agreed for the most part. I mean the ever so slightly cooler colours and ever so slightly better grain structure can be seen on the MI4K version of Taxi Driver if you look closely, but its certainly not in a hundred years worth upgrading from if you have the orignal Blu-Ray which looks nearly just as good and has tons of bonus features.

I will agree that Taxi Driver probably wasn't the greatest example, but seeing as it's one of my favourite films I feel it's worth the upgrade. Looking at the screenshots below there is a definite difference to my eyes.

I don't know if its just me but if anything going off that single comparsen, I actually prefer the look of the orignal Blu over the MI4K Blu. The warmer slightly yellow tint looks more appropriate at least for that one shot IMO.

That's exactly what I meant. You have to go to SUCH extend to prove its superiority. That's what I meant by marginal improvement.
DVD to blu is worth the buck. Regular blu to 4k, not so much.

My opinion on purchasing these 'Mastered in 4K' discs are as follows:

Angels & Demons - Worth purchasing (MI4K features Theatrical Cut only)
Glory - Worth purchasing
Ghostbusters - Worth purchasing
Godzilla - Worth purchasing
Men In Black - Worth purchasing
Spider-man - Worth purchasing
Spider-man 2 - Worth purchasing (MI4K features Theatrical Cut only)
Moneyball - Worth purchasing
Pineapple Express - Worth purchasing (MI4K features Theatrical Cut only)
The Karate Kid - Worth purchasing (I have linked to a zoomed in comparison to show clearly that the MI4K release is superior in terms of detail. I also believe the colour is better on the MI4K release)

The rest I wouldn't recommend purchasing, although I do own both releases of Taxi Driver and I prefer the MI4K release for its slight colour difference and more refined grain structure, but I wouldn't recommend it over the original release to Joe public.

Marginal? That's a matter of opinion I suppose. Identical compression? Certainly not; they've also fixed the very subtle stair-stepping artifacts on the original disc. While people who sit further from their TVs might find it a wash, I have no trouble distinguishing the two on my setup.

42041,

I've been curious for a while - what happens to be your set-up?

On the video side, currently a Panasonic P60VT60, which recently replaced my old Pioneer Elite 9G plasma. Blu-ray playback courtesy of a PS3 and an HTPC. I prefer to sit somewhat closer to the screen, which I find more immersive, but unfortunately it also makes transfer quality issues much more apparent. Also got a Samsung LCD in the living room but I can't stand watching movies on an LCD.

Yep, I sit about 8 to 8.5 ft from my 65VT60. Incredible display.

Especially when the regular Blu for Taxi Driver was struck from the same 4K source that the Mastered in 4K edition was, and both are still obviously 1080p.

I know I spoke about this on the previous page but I will again just for the hell of it. For spiderman 1 and 2 4k, how big a difference is it regarding the 4k version and the second release of the original trilogy? By second release I mean the versions at are all blue and similar looking to one another.

I do care about the special features so if the picture isn't that big of a difference, I may go with those. I have the 2 disc editions of everything on DVD but I mean the whole point of blu ray and all this new tech is to see it in a higher quality.. Any help?

I use my sony 4K vw1100 projector to view these MI4 films. They upscale the downscaled 1080p discs and make them look closer to the original source.

The 'Mastered in 4K' disc's of Spider-man 1 and 2 are a step up in terms of PQ, if that's your main concern then you should buy those.

Any other release of Spider-man 1 and 2 that isn't 'Mastered in 4K' all share the same PQ, just different packaging.

You will have to make a choice, if you like PQ and extras then you are going to have to buy both versions, as already discussed these MI4K releases do not have any special features and Spider man 2 isn't the 2.1 version. Or keep your DVD's and buy the MI4K releases.

This is the norm for collectors, having to buy multiple releases of the same film to obtain the most content.

Yes they may look slightly better but upscaling is predictive, the additional information isn't there on the disc.

Resolution isn't everything either, the masters used for these will most likely be in 4:2:2 10-bit format, when you put that on a Blu-ray disc it has to be down sampled to 4:2:0 8-bit as per the spec, a lot of the colour information is lost and can not be brought back, this is the same for all Blu-ray's.

Although these MI4K releases do feature x.v.Colour that does provide slightly more colours than a 'standard' Blu-ray, it isn't part of the Blu-ray spec, thus its results can vary, in some cases actually degrade PQ, due to how its implemented in ones equipment and settings.
