Thru hints, y'all heard it here first (exclusively) on this thread in the Blu-ray.com forum (before it was o-fficially announced) that Tomorrowland would be the first HDR graded (Dolby Vision HDR format) feature film exhibited – https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...d#post10688115
Now Carolyn (from THR) talks to the Director and Producer of the second feature film to be released in the Dolby Vision format - http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/beh...anguage-790870 |

So, esp. with live action motion pictures, in order to harvest the fullest potential out of production intended from the get-go as an HDR release, what elements will need to *up their game* in comparison to that of shooting for an SDR production?
Answer - 1. Lighting 2. Makeup 3. Production Design 4. Costume Design Because….like 4K is to 2K capture, HDR is less forgiving than SDR...but, at the same time, it is capable of greater reward. Moving on. Despite the illustrations presented by all HDR proponents on stage at conferences illustrating in a grandiose graphic or pictorial fashion, the great dynamic range of the human visual system (10 to the 5th nits for bright sunlight down to 10 to the -4th nits for dim starlight), practically, what will colorists have to do in order to make it all work well for viewers? I don’t know if it is a 2K or 4K projector, but nevertheless, the donation sure is a fine gesture

Today’s Throwback Tuesday Post
From last December, elaborating upon the value of high dynamic range (HDR) with regards to interiors and exteriors captured in the same shot …. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...s#post10221305 Now flash forward 4 months later, where I was reminded of that ^ past post while viewing an HDR demo at the Canon booth at the past NAB 2015 that was showing the short film ‘Trick Shot” (shot in 4K) with its interiors/exteriors through the large window while playing high stakes pool…… https://vimeo.com/124750526 P.S. On a somewhat odd/awkward note, some of the professional cinematographers in attendance there felt that the film was extremely sexist in that it stereotyped the female character in a negative way. I don’t know, I was too busy watching the imagery. |

Best not *overdo it* for the sake of making HDR images really *pop* and thusly get into a situation of viewer discomfort, like that of some early 3D releases which caused eye fatigue for yet another overly aggressive practice, namely….large, rapid changes in parallax. Something else rather important, although more the responsibility of others, will be to replicate the HDR imagery at home, as it was seen and created in the mastering suite and that will involve another factor which was discussed months ago, namely ambient or room lighting ….the level of which will turn out to be even more critical for viewing HDR than SDR content, but for which, there is no *best practice* policy, much less standardized method to be implemented at home, as we are still early in the HDR adopting curve. |

Hah! I couldn't do that shit even when I didn't have pins and plates holding my lower left peg together. I've managed to ditch my own Zimmer frame though (my balance is way too bad for crutches) and I'm finally able to walk unaided some three-and-a-bit months after breaking it.
