Well, I guess I needn’t give you a heads-up to anymore industry VIP demos in the London area then, but I thought you'd previously said you were a Rangers fan? So then, be you originally from London (QPR) or way up north (Glasgow)? I’m geographically confused as to your affiliation.

I liked (of what I watched) your YouTube video on laser discs because for one thing, it caused me to momentarily reflect back as to whether owners of laser disc movies today would still be able to watch those movies if the big discs had been introduced way-back-then requiring…..online authentication.

I think not.

I am sure the SDR images were unmolested in those tests...
I admire your persistence but I really dislike the look of it.

I only know of one Sony executive associated with mastering, notorious for molesting the truth of things for example

And I admire your obstinacy as it serves as a good sounding board for well informed rebuttal by those with firsthand experience, like me. In fact, I admire it so much that I lobbied for a reduction in the time of the suspension for your past misbehavior.

At my favorite local camera expo this weekend (which also boasts the best food truck(s) around and better cuisine than NAB), filmmakers were likening HDR as to “getting that extra-large box of Crayola crayons with more colors”…. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/beh...ad-bird-800597

But alas Mike, I have empathy for traditional acquisition and exhibition which I think you have a strong affinity for, so in that spirit - http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/beh...l-eight-800623

Woah.....in the THR piece about the Ultra Panavision tests they also mention that Star Wars: Rogue One is gonna use it. Star Wars + anamorphic 70mm = I've died and gone to nerd heaven.

OR they may be using the lenses with the Alexa 65 which has a sensor akin to 5-perf 65mm, in any case Rogue One is going to look ****ing fabulous.

Ditto! I am looking forward to getting a new 4K TV soon. I'd really like to see some 4K with HDR at 60 fps.

According to the spokesman, the “Jurassic World” (see logo pictured above) 4K Ultra HD demo clips will include HDR and a wide color gamut (DCI-P3 standard) which will be demonstrated on connected Samsung JS9500 and JS9000 series TVs."

The article provides an overview of HDR plans for 2015.

EDIT: I just read several first hand accounts of this demo on AVS. No one was impressed. According to BB, the Jurassic World clip is streamed from Samsung servers. You would think they would have downloaded it. Samsung just shot themselves in the foot and did not do HDR any favors.
That sucks. I was looking forward to seeing some HDR demos before I shell out the cash for an HDR 4K TV. Maybe by July, when Sony's new 4K line is supposed to be in stores, they will have some good 4K HDR movies. I am not sure how much brighter the HDR in Sony's TVs is supposed to be. A standard would be nice.

NAB 2015: Sony BVM-X300 4K Monitor - YouTube
One of the things mentioned in the video is that what we have been seeing is 0-100 nits where as the video in the other monitor was 0-1000nits. TVs have been capable of more than 0-100 nits for some time. So how many nits are TVs? You don't see that in specs so are companies going to add HDR and charge more even though they are not really different? I think the important part is handling the colors more than the brightness.

I was told by a sales guy that all new Sony TVs are HDR capable. I wonder if that is because they can handle the brightness but what about the colors? I will have to do more investigating when I get closer to the time for buying a new 4K TV.

The latest Sony 4K sets have a BT.2020 option in the colour space selection, so I'd say they're ready re: the colour. That certainly doesn't mean that they're capable of displaying the whole gamut, but that they can accept a 2020 signal and map it to its own primaries.

The high end 2015 Sony sets are getting a HDR firmware upgrade are they not?

I have the 65x9005a and have resigned myself to the fact that a new set will be on the cards during next year. At the moment I will take the increase in resolution, but would like to witness UHD BD to its fullest effect if possible...

How many Adrian Wrights have we got up in here???

But yes, the 2013/2014 Sony sets will be missing out on one too many features of UHD BD for me to be happy with what I've got. I was resigned to missing out on this or that but I got blindsided by HDR. Part of me now wonders whether UHD BD will even be worth bothering with just for the spatial resolution increase alone. Getting wowed by a specifically shot TV broadcast is one thing, movies is something else.

I think I'd say the same for the format in general give or take a few months after it's released but hey if it takes off & becomes mainstream.. Stranger things have happened.

[Show spoiler]J/k I would like 4K to be the laserdisc to my VHS

Any thoughts on BT being the first to air a 4k tv channel? Haven't heard much about it other than it's for football and rugby and I believe it's delivered over the internet?

Do you mean BT? It'll probably be compressed to shit anyway.
