The following blogger/reporter piece -> http://www.flatpanelshd.com/focus.ph...&id=1453967327
, sent to me, is a pretty nice article, but for at least a couple corrective realities which I mention for our advanced readership.....

The statement that “LG argued that OLED can reproduce over 20 “dynamic stops” compared to 12 for high-end LCDs” is not quite as numbers significant as LG would make one believe given post houses are (and still do) grade the content so that it can best be seen by the vast majority of the public……which, mind you, owns LCD tvs.

ray learned that ^ lesson last summer

btw, where is our ray (from Irvine)? Hope all is well heath wise.

Secondly, the interviewer claims he was told….
“So if you have an OLED TV capable of reaching 600 nits peaks it will simply cut off the higher-end of the brightness range in the DV signal. How to best do that is still being debated (italics mine). Neil told us that last year’s HDR OLED TVs tended to clip highlight details in very bright scenes due to this intentional clipping of the upper end. This year’s models will have an improved algorithm to retain more details.”

Hmmm....There was/is really no “debate” as to the best practice and procedure for managing highlight or shadow details, as this has been known for a long time in engineering circles, e.g. “of course roll-off, rather than hard clipping”. It just seems that LG got with the program in 2016.

Full Disclosure: Personally, if I felt inclined to soon purchase a new TV and down-sizing as well as cost was of little concern, I think I would purchase the 2016 LG Signature series 65” 4K OLED.

I'm sure that 65" is going to be nice. It's just a crying shame LG can't sell the 77" OLED near the price of the 75" Sonys (about $6-7,000).

Tough decisions to come. There are basically 3 TVs in the running for me this year...the 65" E6 OLED is certainly one of them. I just am NOT sold I can live the next 3-4 years with a 65" TV instead of a 75".

Yes, tough decision, for if it’s your only or primary TV and If you can’t or don’t care to move your seating arrangement forward to compensate, most enthusiasts I’ve spoken to have been disappointed when they’ve downsized to a smaller TV because they’ve become so accustomed to a certain F.O.V. over the years.

For instance, I really don't enjoy that much the TV we have in our bedroom and often multi-task while watching it.

If all be well (hopefully ), why aren’t you protecting the future?

when the younger ray (from Michigan) chimes in with comments like this…..

He previously owned the lg oled ef9500. The hdr was so impressive on the vizio that he even says that nothing he seen on the oled is as good as the vudu hdr on the vizio. The vizio has 384 zones and a current world record of 85-90% of the rec2020 color space. So call it a "super lcd". Exciting times

Part of the ^ LG tv Super Bowl commercial kind of reminds me of Tron: Legacy, and from that, past reminisces from a previous bike ride with other (non-corporate) Insiders

and follow-ups which, for the sake of those reading now, but may not have been around the forum of Blu-ray.com back in 2011, reveals the cinematographer referenced for years in my Signature…..the same fellow who shot the first 4K feature motion picture released in theatrical Dolby Vision.

Don't get over excited now. I only created that database link, for a future possible release. I am sure that will happen.

No, Scorpion Soldier did a couple. Spectre was my first unannounced title for database.

Peter, unless you live in Flint Michigan , or are a pediatrician, I think you’re over thinking it.

I kind of like it. Plus, considering how expensive Super Bowl commercials are, think how much longer it takes to say “O dash L dash E dash D”.

At the recent Advanced Imaging Society’s Creative Arts Awards, Pannon Entertainment’s “Emma” was awarded for best use of HDR and Atlantic Productions’ “Great Barrier Reef” won in the Best UHD content category” as reported by Carolyn….http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/beh...best-3d-859699. Carolyn , by the way, will be moderating an ACES panel at my favorite upcoming desert retreat, more on that later as we get closer.

Although not being the first theatrical released feature motion picture in HDR, it should be noted that “Emma” is considered by many to be the first short film of consequence (dvdmike never did show us his HDR work ) to be shot specifically with/for HDR in mind from the get-go.

Regarding “Emma”, in the SMPTE SG Report (thee intended publication timing being exclusively alerted to Blu-ray.com forum readers prior to its publication last October) as well as the last August heads-up to Retailer Insider Robert about the yet to be published ‘one-pagers’ with regards to various HDR approaches/solutions…

So anyway, for the skinny on “Emma”, see Appendix E, starting on p.37 (just prior to the Ultra HD Blu-*ray Video Characteristics)

Silent dashes. The dashes only show up on 16K displays.

Will that TV change you're opinion of HDR to a more positive one?
