That was a sarcastic question meant to show the utter lack of logic in the statement I was responding to.

Technically, it's any part of your face that has mucous membranes, because that's the primary point of infection where the virus can attach itself to you. So, that means nose, mouth and eyes. You need to protect the both from droplets in the air and also anything you might pick up with your hands.

The "experts" on TV tell us that regular citizens don't need to wear masks as we go about our business in public areas but that seems to be for purposes of giving frontline health professionals more access to masks for their work, not necessarily so the public themselves can be protected. I paid $12 for two masks earlier this week and plan to re-use them for a few days a piece but if they don't offer any real protection I won't use them. Can't breathe in them anyway.
It's not that masks don't offer any real protection. As I said before, the main way to prevent infection is "virus blocking" - you keep the virus the hell away from the mucous membranes in your face (mouth/nose/eyes) remembering that it will either be droplets in the air or something in your hands. From this perspective, *any* protection on your face is better than none at all. How much protection you want is up to you.

I'm avoiding most of my favorite trails now unless they are wide or flat. Even though I'm comfortable passing within 6 feet of someone outside (since there's a huge difference in airborne transmission risk in being outside vs. inside a grocery store), I know others, mostly hikers, are uncomfortable seeing an approaching jogger.

Plus the trails are more crowded now, what with people having more time on their hands, with fewer places to go and with the benefits of exercise on their minds in raising immunity levels (not to mention just being at home means they are less active than before and need exercise just to not gain weight).

But streets are a nice alternative to trails, and I see more joggers and walkers on them now, so cars are kinda getting used to that too and will be anticipating them more, making it safer (and fewer cars anyway).

I will admit, I am a spoiled runner, always trying to do point to point running with minimal disruptions. Again though, I know these are difficult times and will do my best to cooperate. I will say if this run doesn't work out on Sunday, I will probably start running at my sister's old house because there's less traffic out there and the downhill on the way back is great for my pace splits.

Pretty much. London tubes have apparently also been pretty bad because there are so few trains throughout the day.

One of my childhood friends is a New York anesthetist and he has to ride the tram to work. Doubt he's any happier about it than any of the people in that picture.

Grotesquely, it has been found out that the first Covid-19 death in Brazil actually happened in January as opposed to late February as had been previously publicized - the authorities kept quiet about it so as to not negatively impact the Carnival.

My parents get angry when I say there should be the death penalty for reckless and corrupt public authorities and politicians here, but my belief in it just deepens when faced with such a disregard for the people.

I'm personally not saying they can't be. There are tons of people that still need the transit system. It's just, something has to be done to help reduce these kinds of packed trains. The transit system here reduced service because of decreased ridership (and because workers were getting infected), but that actually makes the situation worse. We need more trains, that come more often to help lower the amount of people per train.

I'm positive trains are one of, if not the biggest hotspots for transmissions in the city. One infected person on that train could infect dozens of others, and then every one of those people could then do the same to hundreds more without knowing. It has to be the biggest density areas left in the city right now (aside from hospitals perhaps).

It is bizarre that they consider convenience stores etc as non essential business's over there. Surely that would help with people having to travel on trains just to get essentials especially in places like NY where public transport is such a necessity. I guess that would mean more people would have to go to work so you're screwed either way.

What an absolute mess!

NYC also blocked off the fronts of their buses to protect drivers, letting people on from the back only (free rides). That doesn't help the riders of course who now have to crowd into a smaller area, but people can wait for another bus if need be.

It falls under Mayoral and the Torys were slagging him a couple of weeks back. But it's because of staff shortages due to illness rather than them putting less trains on the tracks. There's a LOT of closed stations as well.

4/3/2020 Progress Note
My sister-in-law seems to be improving slightly as the sedation and vent settings have been dialed back a bit. No evidence of cytokine storm.

As to potential new therapies, here locally, in my neck of the woods at St. Joe’s Hospital in thee O.C., we had a man who recovered from COVID-19 donate his blood on Wednesday for use as convalescent plasma. Fingers crossed as to his antibodies helping out another patient in critical condition in the ICU. I think this is the first time this has been performed on the West Coast.

Also odds of airborne transmission through the eyes is extremely small. Someone would basically have to cough sneeze in your face or breath heavily on you. The eyes aren't an inhaler and so can't draw in enough microns to cause transmission, for example, just by walking around in a supermarket.

So yes, a mask does offer protection. Sure, it can get in airborne, through your eyes , but the odds are really small, and not enough to worry about. Most transmission occurs from inhaling and nearly all the rest from touching your mouth, nose or eyes before washing your hands. Please stop with the misinformation about masks not worth the bother because it can still get in your eyes. Some protection is better than none.

Also, we have to start assuming that any of us can be asymptotic carriers and wear them for that reason alone. That's why the CDC is changing their stance on masks, and so should the WHO.
As I said to another poster, your post further proves my point so I am NOT posting misinformation.
