Peter, when are you going to come out of the soccer closet and admit that you’re already saving up money for tickets to the World Cup this year in Brazil?

If you're truly sorry, then you’re forgiven....a few pages back, the following was posted before most theaters even got the data on their servers….https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ts#post8738273

Dub, if you go see TMM at the cinema, you can try this visual challenge on for size…..https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...el#post8762502

SMPTE luminance standard for digital cinema is about 14 foot Lamberts (see http://standards.smpte.org/content/9...2011/SEC1.refs ), which works out to be a lowly 48 nits (rounded).

P.S.
Among people not in the display business, ‘nits’ are also known as “cootie eggs”....my niece so informs me.

That would explain why my typical theater outing is so much less engrossing than watching the same movie on my Panasonic plasma TV.

On that note, in a couple weeks I’ll be attending a tech retreat in the dez (this particular one being a yearly pilgrimage for me….https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...pa#post8094127 , which is arguably one of the best (if not thee best) in the U.S., to which Dolby is supplying several speakers on several topics ranging from fundamental reasons for Dolby Vision to….possible recommendations to B.T.2020.

I’m looking forward to it. I kinda wish the researchers from Rennes (Technicolor) were also presenting just to get a different viewpoint on their vision of HDR, although I believe Dolby is miles ahead of everyone else with their work in this area….and they’ve got the peer-reviewed published papers to prove it. I see Technicolor’s value mostly being as a contributing factor to making HDR and other range extensions happen with HEVC, which is a noble pursuit.

In the real world, cinemas are actually even more challenged than that for 2 reasons.
1. Because the 14 foot Lambert (+/-3) standard, is what they’re supposed to be with a recent calibration.
2. That 14-ish figure is for screen center, it drops to 9fL or 31 nits (cootie eggs) as being acceptable for the sides (SMPTE 431-1-2006).

Reminder for PeterTHX….these times are Eastern - http://worldsoccertalk.com/premier-league-tv-schedule/

Ergo, tomorrow’s Liverpool vs. Arsenal match starts at 4:45 A.M, our time! so either get your butt out of bed early or set your DVR accordingly.

Wow, Dolby, Technicolor and Sony each planning their own version. Somehow I see Dolby getting the 4K BD and TV market but wouldn't having a clear "winning" version help the introduction of 4K BDs or are they so determined to make it a stream only thing, 'cause that's all you read. I might have come off as a streaming fan, though I never did stream anything, but I'm for what's best and seemingly BD should be from what is said here. Or would those other options just require a software update?

Wendell, you’ve got to alert Mark H. to that ^.

My question is what will become available first to anyone who is interested in partaking?….the Redray or, a worthwhile filmmaking course covering career advice topics typically not presented in film school - https://www.facebook.com/Advancedfilmmaking

Because, after all, at their basic core, aren’t the Red Users aspiring filmmakers first?

Any options achieving equivalent picture quality level to that of full (consumer) Dolby Vision would probably require 10 bit panels from TV manufacturers such as the Vizio reference which was shown at the last CES…..although I wouldn’t be surprised if at a future CES if some marketer types would enjoy advertising a new model TV based on a special sauced version of 8 bit B.T.709 as ‘HDR’, if they could.

As in the patent description which I linked previously for basic illustrative purposes, Dolby is using a dual layer codec tech consisting of an enhancement layer and a base layer so that content distributors (be it for Blu-ray, OTT streaming or even broadcast) could adopt Dolby Vision for their deliverables while retaining backward compatibility to legacy devices.
