Still a better deal for us Canadians to go for it at that price. Factor in Criterion's insane base shipping of $10 and the current exchange rate and Criterion's own sales are doing little for the non-Americans at this point.

Can you guys suggest some really dark/depressing/emotional films in collection, like filled with raw/real emotion? Maybe include DVD only versions, but preferably bluray (unless I can get on bluray in UK!).

I have a lot already such as:

Autumn Sonata,
Antichrist,
Breaking The Waves,
Fat Girl,
Shoah (still not watched though!),
Qatsi Trilogy,
Salo,

Etc (link to my collection is in my signature).

Just really need some more and I got most the obvious ones I know, but if there are more than that would be me very happy (oh the irony!).

It's a really powerful movie. It's not depressing so much as oppressive. You don't feel sorry for these people in some sappy, maudlin way so much as much feel bad for them.

It's a lot like Everlasting Moments, oddly enough.

In both cases the situations and subject matter are very dark and heavy but the films are kind of uplifting.

I think thats one I will be buying as soon as I get paid, did enquire about it before and was ready to buy in sale on eBay but had NO money, was devastated haha.

Its a blind buy, but seems to have a lot of good things said about it - never heard of it before, so thanks to Criterion for getting the film out there - that's what I love about blind buys, find some incredible cinema (Marketa Lazaro, Double life of Veronique etc).

Make Way for Tomorrow, Tokyo Story, and The Man Who Fell to Earth are three of the saddest movies I've ever seen.

The Man Who Fell To Earth makes a really good companion film to Under The Skin as well which I also find very emotional and sad.



Not sure why I like such sad films, but they really excite me and I can connect with them, I find happy films very annoying and false (except for a few exceptions!), sadness in film just comes across more genuine.

I picked up two more Criterion titles at the sale this afternoon, and was amazed at my great fortune. Once again, I had a bunch of coupons in my hand, and the manager said, "Let me see what you've got and we'll try them out," so I handed them to him. He ended up keeping two and gave the rest of them back to me. Here's what I ended up purchasing:

Charade @ 14.39 (39.99 less 50% less 10% less 20%)
It Happened One Night @ 9.99 (39.99 less 50% less 10% less $8.00)

So my grand total was $24.38 plus tax.

I asked him about the 15% off coupon that I linked to earlier today and he told me to come back in and use it before it expires on November 23. So for whatever that is worth ...

I'm off to play Charade! ;-)

Oh, my gosh ... what a tearjerker! But one in which the sentiment flows naturally and honestly. Leo McCarey won the Best Director Oscar in 1937 for his comedy classic, The Awful Truth, but he always said that he would have preferred to have won it for Make Way for Tomorrow, which was released that same year. It's one of those films that got very good reviews when it was first released, but never really found an audience. It first started getting noticed and re-evaluated again in the mid-1970's, and has grown in stature ever since.

I was never particularly fond of Victor Moore, but he's brilliant in this film, and Beulah Bondi is even better! Keep reminding yourself that Ms. Bondi was only 47 years old when she made this film (she was 48 when it was released). Can't wait to hear how you react to it!

Make Way For Tomorrow is available on Blu-ray here in the UK too (via Masters Of Cinema), whereas Criterion only released it on DVD. It's extraordinary, and in the words of Orson Welles - "Oh my God that’s the saddest movie ever made", and "could make a stone cry".

Double-bill it with Tokyo Story for extra sadness.

Just watching Everlasting Moments, finally.

Got so many films to catch up on, I buy them and by time I get them I am in mood for something else haha.

This films is very beautiful despite the locations and the subject.
