No, it makes total sense.

I understand exactly what you mean. I'm searching my library's availability as we speak.

Oh right haha, is it an actual TV show or is it a film made to be like a TV show?

It's a show. Complete with an intro theme to each episode (written and performed by John Lurie) and ending credits.

I like Sofia Coppola's films quite a lot but I never saw the connection between her and Jarmusch/Kaurismaki. I think her style is a lot more different than theirs and when I say a lot, I mean a lot.

Only Lovers Left Alive is brilliant and I think the same of Ghost Dog as well. I think The Limits of Control might be Jarmusch's worst film actually.

What is this monstrosity!?

Fishing with John was one of my first Criterions I ever purchased. I adore this release and any time I want to show off a "curiosity" to someone who wants to see what a failed TV show looked like, I show them this DVD. There were only 6 episodes I believe but each one was so funny (especially the one with Tom Waits... and I guess Dennis Hopper too... and hell, Willem Dafoe as well).

This brings up an interesting idea to me... how about Criterion issue some of the as-of-yet unreleased Sofia Coppola films on Blu-ray? Her films would fit in with the collection perfectly.

Especially if we could finally get Marie Antoinette and Virgin Suicides in BLU I'm all for it.

Is anyone else having trouble with the site loading?

These past few days I have either not been able to load the page or it has froze whilst browsing. At first I thought Polaroid had crashed the site with his nagging but it seems to be a frequent issue, at least for me.

Hey,

Question for you all.

I had a defective copy of Stagecoach (peeling) as well as the Eraserhead swap. I emailed John and he asked me to send them together. I got Eraserhead back quickly but nothing on Stagecoach yet. Anyone have a similar experience? Would it be normal for them to send separately? Thanks!

Its more Jarmusch than anything, and I'm not referring to any his other films when I made the comparison as I haven't seen them.

I just felt the tone and mood of Sofia's films, in particular LIT and TVS was similar to OLLA.

I know they are different genres and are world apart in terms of story and style. But I found the tone and atmosphere very similar - also the themes of isolation, loneliness, sadness and a longing featured heavily in these films. Also found the pacing very similar, more so with LIT.

Im probably making very little sense! but in my head it makes perfect sense! lol

Just got back from seeing Men, Women and Children. I think I loved it, I preferred it to Boyhood, its not a perfect film but it really represented our generation really well and it's my favourite film from this director. I need to see again to truly judge how I felt but I really liked it and I wasn't expecting to like it this much.

Just in case you have any money left in the bank after the latest super-sale at Barnes & Noble, and/or have any regrets about titles you wished you had picked up, Deep Discount is running a 42% to 44% sale on most Criterion titles released through the end of October 2014.

I was sorely tempted to think about putting together an order for $100.00 or more that I could charge to my PayPal credit account and not have to pay for until next June, but I decided that would be irresponsible, selfish and wrong.

Wouldn't it ...?

Have you ever watched a film by Aki Kaurismaki? Now that director I can say is more similar to Jim Jarmusch. I don't see any Jarmusch in S. Coppola's work whatsoever. Lost in Translation isn't dry or deadpan at all. It's a very intimate, warm film about a female who is discombobulated and there are no Jarmusch films that have similar themes, including Only Lovers Left Alive, that can relate to Lost in Translation.
