I used it on I Married a Witch, because it's still about 10 bucks less than Amazon Canada.

[Show spoiler]I have not seen time bandits in over 30 years. I saw it in 1983, during the summer before i started sixth grade, when it aired in the middle of the night on hbo while some neighborhood friends and i were spending the night at one friend's house down the street. We had made s'mores over a campfire in the woods behind our neighborhood earlier that night, then gone inside to watch an mtv video countdown ("hungry like the wolf" by duran duran and "every breath you take" by the police were featured prominently in the countdown.). We then stayed up way being as disruptive as we could without waking up this friend's parents. At some point, when we were winding down, time bandits started, and we all ended up staying awake through the whole movie. It's really amazing how much of that movie i still remember, considering that i saw it so long ago in the wee hours of the night.

Terry gilliam movies are a mixed bag with me, and, quite frankly, time bandits is the only one that i have been interested in owning, if, for nothing else, to capture and encase another spark of memory from my childhood.

Tonight's viewing should be fun

I watched the actual movie last night, and am now going through the special features. The fold-out criterion leaflets have caused some annoyance, judging from posts in this thread, but i think that the foldout map setup of this one is perfect, considering its relevance to the film.

[Show spoiler]I chuckled at the scenes with ralph richardson as the supreme being, because, just last week, i enjoyed his performance as the crypt keeper in tales from the crypt (1972), which was just released by scream factory.

I also love how david warner's role as evil in time bandits blends seamlessly with his role as ed dillinger / sark / master control program in tron (1982). Computers and technology can, indeed, be quite wicked. I'll be watching david warner again soon, since my uk blu-ray set of the omen trilogy arrived in the mail a few days back.

Time bandits is the most accessible terry gilliam film, and, based on the others that i have seen (monty python and the holy grail, the meaning of life, brazil, the fisher king, 12 monkeys, fear and loathing in las vegas, etc.), i think that it's his best film by a long mile. It's a fun movie all around, with tangible special effects in the days before computer animation, and a good mix of comedy and bleakness.

The conclusion of time bandits threw me off when i was a kid, but i appreciate it quite well now
.
Finally picked up my BB steelbook of Guardians this weekend, but didn't get a chance to watch it, instead watched It Happened One Night with my wife... which was a most awesome experience. She is learning to appreciate more of the Criterion-style release films. That's not to say that she has only ever watched the big blockbuster, but she also wasn't a big "Art House" film girl either.

She loved It Happened One Night and asked what other movies like this Criterion has released. We also watched I Married a Witch a few months ago and she enjoyed that as well. Both of these experiences have lead her to not only ask me what else they have, but to buy me quite a few during the last few sales. So I ask of the group, any suggestions on other Criterion releases like these? She also really enjoyed The Red Shoes.

Now back on the topic of the original post, I do think I am getting Time Bandits for Christmas, and can't wait to sit down with this one and turn everything else off. I have really enjoyed most of Gilliam's films. The Monty Python films are some of my favorites (holding a special place as they were some of the first movies I saw in college). And 12 Monkeys, Fear and Loathing, and The Fisher King are all amazing films... no matter how far from center they are. I like the style and love the stories.

Really looking forward to watching both Time Bandits and Guardians very very soon!

"Barnes and Noble Selects" are their version of "Amazon's Deal of the Week". Each week, B&N runs a handful of titles at 30% Off the MSRP online and in-store, no coupon needed. You can see the titles by visiting the website. It's a relatively new promotion, and I don't think any Criterion titles have been offered yet.

Anyway ... if there's also a coupon providing another 30% off ... then we're talking some serious savings ...

Lots of good stuff coming out in the UK recently: THE KILLERS (1946), TWO FOR THE ROAD, THE LOST WEEKEND, DARLING, THE GANG'S ALL HERE, THE THIEF OF BAGHDAD (1940) - anyone have any inkling as to whether Criterion or another domestic company (e.g., Canal, Kino, Olive) has plans with those?

That would be great!

I'm just worried it won't be as great as an announcement as the December and February releases. But I would like to see:

Fisher King
Leaving Las Vegas
Man Who Fell to Earth
Mulholland Drive

Lost Weekend actually came out in 2012, it's Universal, so don't expect anything there. Killers and the 40 Thief of Bagdad are in the Collection and could be upgraded. The rest are anybody's guess, no rumors AFAIK.

So much for the belief it would never make it to blu-ray because of how it was filmed.

Nah, not with the non-Criterion release of Boyhood coming in January. Honestly, I'm not confident we'll even see it released in 2015.

Also, I think I would cry tears of happiness if Criterion released The Age of Innocence or Two for the Road.

Though, Luchino Visconti's Rocco and His Brothers is forever my number 1 most requested title.

Boyhood seems pretty unlikely since the regular blu comes out in January. I'm guessing there would minimum one year between the non Criterion and Criterion releases of Boyhood.

Edit: Just beat me to it soarinsteven!

I completely agree. It has been on my list of top films since I saw it in the theaters. For me, it's Nick Cage's best performance... and last good film.

The movie really spoke to me, not that I was in anyway ina place like he was, but really seemed to understand his plight, and then how he just couldn't remember why he was doing it, just that he had to. I really think Criterion could do a top-notch release for the film.

Mulholland Dr
Dogville
Mishima
Dancer in the Dark
Morvern Callar with The Swimmers short (which is INCREDIBLE).
Spirit of the Beehive

Would make a lovely month!

Not sure if its really Criterion material but would love to see Another Happy Day get a bluray release, such an incredible film that really got pushed away. The performances are spectacular and so honest, and the soundtrack is pure emotion. Its got subtle humour but I find it a really sad and emotional film, I really connected with the lead character.

It's a really weird film though, dunno why it just has a strange feel to it. It feels like really commercial film, yet it has that feeling of an indy film if that makes sense...

Not sure if it did get a bluray release a I cant find on eBay and cant use Amazon...

I forgot today is the 15th.. since Im vacationing days and dates dont really matter to me..
My guesses are - NOTHING ! Im always wrong
What Id like
Mulholland Drive and In a Lonely Place... or one of their horror titles
You know what would be really cool is if they could license Dead of Night from 1945 - that is arguably one of the best anthology movies out there.

We've been really lucky with the horror/scary film genres lately, had a few awesome films, but would love more!

I want more documentaries! Watched Jesus Camp recently... my god.... haha, its good but the subject matter is bizarre and really hard to get your head around, its quite scary too.
