That's the MO of his buddy Will Smith. Hitch called them "duck 'n cover" pictures.

Have you ever seen Collateral? That's a damn good example of Cruise going above and beyond.

2015 wishes: an update to The Killers would make me very happy. Also any Eric Rohmer on blu would make me break my English-only rule. Other than that, there are things I want, but nothing I'm dying for. One of my resolutions for 2015 is to watch more blu rays than I buy.

Happy New Year!

Cruise didn't exactly have the greatest material to work with in WotW, to be fair.

As someone else mentioned, he's awesome in Collateral -- IOW, when he had something to work with.

PS: I can't believe I'm turning into a Tom Cruise apologist.

If it is for a title you are buying today to watch in the next couple of days I'd say The Big Chill. Two Lane Blacktop I LOVE! but I save that one for summertime watching and Badlands just doesn't seem like the right time of year to watch that one either. I own all 3. Sorry I watch my movies usually by season. I know I'm odd haha

The Big Chill just seems more reflective for the New Year.

I've yet to see Collateral.

The script was bad for WOTW. I remember cringing when Cruise called his son a term used for a part of the male anatomy (I won't say it because I've been suspended for much less!).

update: ordered The Big Chill.
child of the 80's. never saw the film. divided opinions over this release. but i love the perceived nostalgic feel of the film.

Have you seen that one, and if so, what did you think?
I've not seen that other film. I've only seen one Davies film in my life and it was TLDC. Don't base your reasoning behind one person's opinion though, as a lot of people have praised this film for being a minor masterpiece. I just didn't "get it" I guess.

I just saw Jack Reacher for the first time a few nights ago and I thought Cruise was pretty good in that. He's become more "low key" in terms of his acting style I think...or maybe its just the character he played.

Collateral is an awesome film not just by Michael Mann but one of the best characters I've seen that Tom Cruise plays. I think every movie Mr. Mann makes is good actually and worth checking out (even Miami Vice). I am psyched for Blackhat which is coming out in a week or so.

I haven't read her book, but Amy Nicholson, who wrote Tom Cruise: Anatomy of an Actor for the Cahiers du Cinema series makes some compelling arguments for his strength as an actor. I have heard her talk on several podcasts, and she has convinced me.

Cruise is a very good actor, and very underrated.

He's excellent in Collateral, Magnolia (especially this one), Eyes Wide Shut, Rainman (better than Hoffman for mine) and a number of other dramas.

Beyond that, he's one of the best and last true action stars we have. There's a great intensity to every role, his physical acting is fantastic and his comedic timing is very underrated.

I will say I love Magnolia, and one of my most favs is the first Mission Impossible film. Great casting all around and I hate to bring it up but the BLU just has DD 5.1 and not HD audio at all. I hear he is going to make another one so here's to hoping for a new edition of the first film with HD audio.

There are times when I wish he wasn't in Eyes Wide Shut... but then I really don't know who else would have been great in the part at that time. I will say he has stayed around for a long time and Edge of Tomorrow was a good movie for him bad at the box office, but rental and purchase wise the movie is a huge hit.

Tristana is out on a Coen release, too.

I couldn't find out much about the BD of The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. I love this movie. Does anyone know anything about the quality of the release? Is it Canadian and so wasn't reviewed on blu-ray.com?

I can't believe I'm less than 24 hours away from watching the Hawks in the Winter Classic, poring over the New Years Card and eating and smoking my way through the first hangover of the new year.

Time flies...

And speaking of end of the year stuff, how is there no sitewide 2014 ROTY thread yet? Those usually start popping up in November or so.

I need to find one, I wanna rave about the Twin Peaks set. I was a little iffy on the blind buy but it's turning out to be quite the delightful romp.
