I like Mr. & Mrs. Smith but it's a screwball comedy and Hitchcock did better with dark comedy ala The Trouble With Harry or the Lamb to the Slaughter episode from his TV series.

According to Hariseldon in the Deals thread, there is a BOGO free sale starting next week. No idea which BDs will be on sale, though.

"DVDs & Blu-ray: Buy 1, Get the 2nd FREE

This offer is valid at BN.com from February 3, 2015 at 12:01am to March 9, 2015 at 11:59pm Eastern time and at Barnes & Noble stores from February 3, 2015 to March 9, 2015 at close of business, while supplies last.

When you purchase one (1) qualifying DVD or Blu-ray from our "DVDs & Blu-ray: Buy 1, Get the 2nd FREE" promotion, you will get a second qualifying DVD or Blu-ray of equal or lesser value for FREE! Simply look for the "DVDs & Blu-ray: Buy 1, Get the 2nd FREE" message icon or sticker to identify eligible items. NOTE: Qualifying items may differ online and in stores. Limit of 3 discounted items per customer."

Hah that's odd; They have a BOGO 50% off sale on right now that runs until February 2nd.

So the awesome a/v section of my local library had 'Black Narcissus' on blu-ray, and after reading the glowing reviews of the cinematography on here, I couldn't pass it up. I hope it looks as good as 'The Red Shoes' did.

After I get done watching the three Criterion blu-ray releases by Powell and Pressburger, what would you guys recommend of theirs? Preferably more technicolor

Not so sure about I Origins, from what I've heard, but by all means looking forward to see that one, as well.
Well, look who it is! My new Scarlett Johansson doppelgänger. I have watched Another Earth in fact. A good indie sci fi flick for sure. I still want to see I Origins though for sure.

Bit gutted as its payday and they only paid me for 10 days! despite doing over a month there and 40-50 hours a week lol!

Really wanted to catch up on some Criterions from previous announcements but will have to wait till next month now grrr!

I have such a big back log to catch up on >.<

Least I managed to get a couple copies of Last Year At Marienbad on Bluray now! and the Criterion Designs which is must have for Criterion fans!

Hope we get some big releases in Feb, I'm sorta hoping we get a month of upgrades, I started to explore the Criterion DVD's and there are so many incredible films I want but I want Blu! :P

I have been pretty happy with a mix of upgrades and new titles, but I agree they have so many that we would love to see upgraded. When there are like 4 new titles and 1 upgrade it gets me concerned about their older titles. Especially with the double release of some older titles on blu such as Breathless. That and the rerelease of the dual packs is sucking energy from titles that haven't been upgraded once.

I could never see the logic in re releasing film ALREADY on bluray, just for dual format - so illogical lol.

I think it was pretty logical. At that time they were planning on dual being the standard, so when it came time to print more copies of something, they just made them dual. No sense printing more copies of the blu only versions when the plan at the time was to phase those out.

But why make it part of the announcement? Why waste a space for something new/upgrade? They could have just phased it in quietly lol

I don't think there was any indication that a release like that was taking the spot of another release.

More to the point, it wasn't just a re-release of a film already on Blu-ray. It was a combined re-release of a film already on Blu-ray and DVD. The stocks on both ran low enough that they decided it was more economical to restock with a Dual Format edition rather than separate ones.

It's probably still more economical. To those who think leaflets are a cost cutting move, you need to look no further than the abandoning of the dual format for a cause.

I've got to believe that the newsletter clue is for "The Confession," not "I Confess." Even with a new arrangement with Warner, I can't imagine that Criterion would start with a lower-tier Hitchcock film, rather than more obvious 'art house' titles like "Blow-Up," "Day For Night," or "Death In Venice."

I agree this could honestly be for either movie. Until the announcement happens who knows. The more I've looked at the clue the more it feels more like The Confession. although truth be told I would love them to release Z on the same day.

Z is highly underrated and while I like the cover art of the DVD I think many may have never looked into the film or passed it up. It ranks up there with the great political thrillers of the 1970's
