I still need to watch my Blu-ray of La Dolce Vita. I watched my old DVD copy several times, but the Blu-ray has been sitting in the unwatched stack for a couple of months now. I just have not been in the above-mentioned specific mood lately.
I think you would like Amarcord. It's a fun film and has another of those damn "Can't get it out of my head for days!" Nino Rota scores that just fits perfectly.

You're not the only one. I paid a lot higher than face value for out of print Criterion blu-rays of The Man Who Fell to Earth and The Third Man a few years ago.

I keep putting off hunting The Man Who Fell to Earth, and I just gave in and bought the StudioCanal Third Man release.

I much prefer Fellini's earlier work from the 1950's and the early 1960's, up through and including Juliet of the Spirits in 1965.

Of all his films (and I've seen most of them), I especially loath Fellini Satyricon, despite the brilliant cinematography and art direction. I found the subject matter vaguely distasteful, and thought the movie's pace was painfully s....l....o....w and boring. And I suppose I found the inclusion of the director's name in the film's title a bit pretentious. Even the cool, enigmatic presence of Capucine failed to capture my imagination.

Ah, well, as they say: to each his own!

I haven't seen a lot of Fellini films, so can't really add to this, but I can't count the number of times I've said "to each his own." Both good and bad reasons, that's what makes film so great!!

Yes, more Carole Lombard would be great! I'd love to see Twentieth Century also.

It's because a copycat film came out around the same time called 'Satyricon', so he had to add 'Fellini' to distinguish it.

Whenever I think of "Satyricon", I think about the 1992 album of the same name from the band, Meat Beat Manifesto. I wore that CD out back then when I was in college.

The premise of Fellini's Satyricon does not really quicken my pulse. I think that his themes of decadence carry over quite well with his stories that are set in contemporary times, though, so I might be pleasantly surprised if I give the movie a chance someday when I'm in the mood.

Well, that certainly makes sense. Thank you for that explanation, and color me slightly abashed! Did a similar set of circumstances apply to the naming of Fellini's Casanova?

I did the same. The picture really isn't that bad, especially considering what the OOP Criterion blu-ray is going for nowadays.

Yeah, I really enjoyed the release. It looks pretty great, though I have nothing to compare it to. But yeah, better than the $$$ for the OOP Criterion.

Blue Is the Warmest Color is $13.99 at both Amazon and Best Buy.

Maybe they're clearing inventory to make way for the special edition?

That would be nice... I held off during the last 50% sale figuring the more detailed release would be out this year. I'm really curious what they would add in the way of features. Maybe some deleted scenes, a featurette on the "controversy," and a nice commentary??

I think you guys have sold me on watching Polanski's first. It sounds like it'll hold my attention better, and I know my local library just got it in recently. I'll probably have to buy or bootleg the Orson Welles one.

I haven't seen 'Throne of Blood' yet, but I really liked his retelling of 'King Lear' in 'Ran', so I'll keep my eye out for it. I honestly didn't even know 'Ran' was based on a Shakespeare play the first time I saw it lol.
