My rankings, having yet to see Fantastic Mr. Fox:

1. The Grand Budapest Hotel
2. The Life Aquatic
3. Rushmore
4. The Royal Tennenbaums
5. Moonrise Kingdom

6. Bottle Rocket

Those 2 seem like perfect candidates though and I'm hoping we see at least one before the end of the year.
I would also love to see Criterion pick up TAoJJbtCRF. Not only for a better transfer and extras but the existing disc doesn't even have lossless audio! This is a film that deserves top-notch video and audio and has neither.
Another title I wish, Wish, WISH for in the Collection would be Downfall. I have the UK edition and it's ok but I think it deserves a better treatment that would include both cuts along with more extras and a lossless track.

Wes Anderson doesn't put out movies regularly enough for the frequency we rank them in this forum.

Anyway, the correct answer is:

Moonrise Kingdom
Life Aquatic
Royal Tanenbaums
Grand Budapest Hotel *
Darjeeling LTD
Fantastic Mr Fox
Rushmore *
Bottle Rocket

* both need revisiting

My parents disliked Budapest Hotel quite a bit so they drove me away from seeing it. My best friend however loved it so I guess it's a divisive movie.

I recently imported the Canadian Blu-ray of Downfall and I'm quite pleased with it. The lossless audio sounds excellent as well.

Agreed. As a Sony title it's even somewhat plausible to happen, though they don't let go of too many of their SPC titles to sub-licensing.

They would need to have a bonus feature about the parodies, too.

If it's not Mulholland Drive it will just be something else. If it's a not Wes Anderson that's already gotten a perfectly good Fox release it'll be some other region-free release - maybe another Lynch titles, maybe something completely different - but once Mulholland Drive is announced we won't have to wait long to meet its equally annoying successor.

We never do

I'm not sure where I'm at. 'I get it, I just don't want it' sounds pretty good, actually. That was my immediate reaction too. But the fact that he's so popular among so many otherwise fairly rational people does give me pause.

I haven't seen all of Anderson's films, but the only one I've seen so far that I like (but don't love) is The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

The Grand Budapest Hotel looked interesting, though. My wife has watched it on HBO (it's her first Anderson film) and liked it quite a bit -- enough that she suggested I pick up the Blu-ray, though when I mentioned that there'd be an inevitable Criterion release, she said she could wait.

I have it on the DVR from an HBO showing, but haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

I just chalk it up to high subjectivity. It's like trying to reconcile the fact that "otherwise fairly rational people" don't like The Three Stooges.

I heard a crazy rumor the other day, some film historian said on Twitter that "film is subjective." Hahaha have you ever heard such a thing? I hope he gets fired.

Anyone else out there feel that Fantastic Mr. Fox is his overall best? To me, the childrens film is where his style just worked better than his live action ones, and I feel that that is one of the best kids films of the past decade. It was the case, as with all his work to me, that I was hyper-aware of what was going on cinematically/stylistically but it all just gelled in a way his others don't, where I could overlook the random title cards and crap because it actually fit - probably because the fantastical direction was matched with a fantastical cast of talking animals. My 2nd favourite is Moonrise Kingdom, probably for the same general reasons, in that it is totally set up as a farce. My least favourite of his is The Royal Tenenbaums. I tried to watch that for the second time when it hit blu to see if my opinion would change, and I shut it off when Luke Wilson
[Show spoiler]tries to commit suicide
. Anderson's style just does not lend itself to such serious/heavy stuff especially when it is surrounded by much lighter things. The tonal shifts in that film make it dreadful for me, none of the dramatic ideas really worked.

I do have In The Mood For Love, one of my favorite films of all time.

But thanks for the other suggestions. I've felt like something of a incompetent because of my lack of any knowledge of Ozu particularly. That's just not acceptable, and needs to be addressed for sure.

johnnyb's post is a good one, check those films off as you go! He missed a big one though - Imamura. His films are a must as well

Many, many years ago, I watched The Royal Tenenbaums with a friend who recommended it. I laughed out loud during the scene where
[Show spoiler]Luke Wilson attempts suicide
, which confused my friend. The way it was executed (no pun intended) was funny to me and I got the feeling that's what Anderson was going for. Then again, I love dark humor so maybe I do "get" that part of Anderson's style.

I'll throw in some Kurosawa. Watched Red Beard at the weekend and was blown away. Forget that it is only on DVD, buy it!

So what do you think Tony Leung's character was whispering into the hole in the wall at the end? My best guess is:

[Show spoiler]"Oh my God, oh my God. I should have ****ed her."

Don't marathon Ozu's films, by the way. I did that with nearly all of his movies from Late Spring onward and they're so similar in a lot of ways that they just blurred together for me.
