Likewise. Last year I bought the film on Amazon Instant Video for $10, so I could watch it whenever I want. Last time I do something like that, it's not HD but SD, a scan of a pan & scan version (looks like VHS, actually). :P

They had it at the Costco in Raleigh (NC), and I almost got it. I'd like THE LAST WAVE on BD actually (have the DVD). Another classic.

Their site's back up and ... wow, new releases includes Roeg's DON'T LOOK NOW. I should get that to round out my Old School Halloween Spookums collection.

Thief will be my only pick up. B&N sale is closer than you think.

I need to spend $260 to get a $50 credit, so I think I'll be getting sixteen movies.

For sure:
La Dolce Vita
Don't Look Now
City Lights
Sword of Doom
Autumn Sonata
Wings of Desire
Rosetta
El Norte
Seconds
Marketa Lazarova

Undecided:
Metropolitan
Mystery Train
Insomnia
Revanche
The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant
La Cienaga
Y Turn Mama Tambien
Tokyo Drifter
Il Sorpasso
Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion
Red Desert
Sundays and Cybele

There are just too many options...

I was thinking about getting 3 max, 2 of which would be Watership Down and The Devil's Backbone. The third I'm trying to decide between Blue is the Warmest Color (since MSRP is only $25 to begin with), Cronos, George Washington, and Time Bandits

Though I dunno if I'll even get 3 since I've bought so many blus lately haha

Will pick up my usual allotment of five titles for $100.00 that I do every flash sale. I usually get to these flash sales late so I am not bothering to make a list. I will just get five that I do not yet own but like everyone else I always try for the newest releases.

I'm glad I rented Down By Law. Just couldn't get into the movie (although it had its moments) and definitely didn't groove with it like I did Mystery Train.

I'm getting Black Narcissus (only seen it on DVD) and blind-buying:

Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp

I figure Blimp is the safest bet since I loved The Red Shoes and Black Narcissus (albeit to a lesser extent). I really need a Criterion film from the 1970s in my collection and Investigation looks to be the most compatible with my tastes.

Purple Noon is one of my favorites in the Collection and I'm getting somewhat similar vibes from Investigation. Anyone care to confirm/deny?

I'm trying to decide if Watership Down is a safe blind buy? If its supposedly one of the most important animated films in history, I think its worth it.

Do you buy movies because you think they might entertain you or because they're supposedly "important"? Do you enjoy older, 2D animation, particularly not with the Disney polish? Do you want to see a bunch of bad shit happen to cartoon rabbits?

I have not seen the movie. I'd say, judge whether or not you think this is a film that will be compatible with your interests and tastes in cinema.

I just watched the 3 minute trailer and I have to admit, it nauseated me. Sure, I can handle dark, ominous animated films (that are really not for children), but somehow this film doesn't resonate with me. The story is really brilliant though as its about humanity encroaching on the natural world and the clash between good vs. evil amongst other things, but its true, I have to really want this film in order to own it, and its probably smarter if I rent/borrow it first from the library.

Watched my In the Realm of the Senses blu. Definitely a dated HD transfer by current Criterion standards but I was pleased regardless. The audio was of incredible quality though. Absolutely one of the best sounding films of this vintage I own. Really didn't expect it to sound so good. Great movie too.

They both take place in Italy, but beyond that I don't think they are similar. A film that is similar is Bertolucci's The Conformist. I thought IoaCAS was just okay. I agree that you're safe with Blimp although I have not seen it personally.

I too decided I'm in no rush to see Watership Down after watching the trailer. I don't like to see animal violence, even though I obviously make more allowances if it's animated. Still, not something I can imagine myself enjoying.

Why did you think Investigation was "just okay"? I am looking for re-playability in my Blus, which Purple Noon definitely has.

While watership down certainly has violence that sticks in the mind, the vast majority of it is not violent and it has some rather lovely scenes in it here and there. The story and mythology of it all should more than make up for any objections about "animal violence." They're talking cartoons, too, this isn't Cannibal Holocaust!

The violence in Watership Down isn't as bad as it's sometimes made out to be. I watched it for the first time last year, and I was expecting (and kind of hoping, to be honest) for something a lot more brutal and depressing than I got.

I recommend the latter. That's not a dig on the film by any means, I just don't recommend a blind buy.

I can't decide if I should get Trilogy of Life or get Nashville and All That Jazz.

I do know I'll be getting:

The Sword of Doom
The Soft Skin
Riot in Cell Block 11
Don't Look Now
Judex

I know the Eclipse sets are DVD only but do they ever put out a title separately on bluray. Im really interested in the early Fassbinder set but I hate to buy DVDs. Its just a mental thing with me lol I know crazy crazy! Basically I would be more than happy to wait if theres a chance of a Beware of A Holy ***** or Love Is Colder Than Death bluray.
