They have almost all of his masterpieces on there, besides Lightning. I remember watching them and a few have the Criterion Logo bumper you see on the DVDs/Blus. Does that mean anything?

Surely, just having them on Hulu and in fine condition means that they could be released down the line, right?

Different set of rights, typically.

Possibly, but not necessarily. Streaming rights and DVD/blu-ray rights are separate things, just like theatrical, broadcast, etc. That's why so many contracts have to be redone every time a new format comes out, because streaming isn't listed in the previous licensing deals (and like VHS, LaserDisc, DVD and Blu-ray before then). Kinda like how Netflix can get streaming rights, but don't have DVD or blu-ray rights. It is, however a decent estimation that if they go so far as to nab streaming rights, they'd at least like to issue a blu-ray.

Thanks! That clears up a lot.

If I were to list some of the films I've never seen (think Hollywood blockbusters starting with Jaws onward,) I might be booed off this forum. The biggest gap in my viewing history.
I've seen The Ghost and Mrs. Muir more than fifty times, and cry every time. The odd thing is, it always seems as fresh as the first time I saw it.

There are several movies I've seen more than two dozen times: Fred Zinnemann's Julia; It's a Wonderful Life; Nashville; Double Indemnity; Laura; Leave Her to Heaven; The Maltese Falcon; Casablanca; The African Queen; To Kill a Mockingbird; The Lion in Winter; Ulmer's The Black Cat; A Streetcar Named Desire; and Minnelli's Father of the Bride are among them. I tend to "share" my favorite movies with my friends and family, which is one of the reasons I've seen so many movies multiple times.

My favorite scores have all "haunted" me at one time or another and my top 10 instrumental scores would be, in order of preference:

1. Bernard Herrmann's The Ghost and Mrs. Muir
2. John Barry's Out of Africa
3. Elmer Bernstein's To Kill a Mockingbird
4. George Bassman's Ride the High Country
5. David Raksin's Laura
6. Georges Delerue's Julia
7. Victor Young's The Left Hand of God
8. Miklos Rozsa's Plymouth Adventure
9. John Barry's The Lion in Winter
10. Georges Delerue's Steel Magnolias

Normally, I would be crossing my fingers that Criterion might someday release Julia, but I think instead that Twilight Time might be a better candidate, if only because they tend to offer the isolated musical score as a bonus feature, and it's the only one of my favorites that I've never been able to purchase on CD.

Has anyone seen A Master Builder? i was wondering how it compares to the other 2 on the set, since it is from a play adaptation i was thinking it will be more like Vanya on 42nd Street, but not really sure.

Since i haven't seen My Dinner with Andre my main concern is how connected in style and themes those 3 films are, i really enjoyed Vanya, so if the others are like that, i would definitely pick that set.

From what I understand, A Master Builder is based on a play and is therefore similar in style to Vanya on 42nd Street.

I did not like Vanya on 42nd Street by any means and found it rather painful to sit through, but I do adore My Dinner with André. Who knew that two guys having a conversation for almost two hours could be so engaging and engrossing?

hmm sounds good to me then, specially My Dinner with Andre.

Before Sunrise and Before Sunset are mostly two people talking the whole films, another that comes to my mind for some reason are the conversations of David Thewlis which are my main reason i loved Naked.

Naruse on Blu-Ray would be wonderful. At the very least, I'd expect Criterion to give Floating Clouds a Blu-Ray release - his best known film and one of the top three Japanese films ever made, according to the Kinema Junpo polls (it got #2 in 1999 then #3 in 2009).

The one I want most though is Yearning - that final shot is one of my favourites in all of cinema.

I think there is definitely something brewing between Studiocanal and Criterion again, they have released loads of Dvd on demands which look so cheap...

http://www.amazon.com/Man-Who-Fell-E...6725304&sr=1-1

http://www.amazon.com/Woman-Anna-Kar...s=studio+canal

http://www.amazon.com/Last-Year-Mari...s=studio+canal

http://www.amazon.com/Alphaville-Jea...s=studio+canal

I think Studiocanal has come to conclusion they are probably better off reselling the rights back to Criterion for the US market.

Floating Clouds will always be my favorite but Yearning is so close to it that it might as well be my favorite as well. The last shot is beautiful, but then again so is the whole movie. In particular, when she is pouring tea as she is meeting with her mother and she has this sad look on her face. Oh, and when they meet on that train is just one of the most exciting moments ever.

Thought someone else in the Los Angeles area might be interested in seeing this (The Tales of Hoffman): http://www.laemmle.com/films/39089?u...kly+E-News+098

From the email I received: "Based on the 1881 opera by Jacques Offenbach, HOFFMANN is an anthology of fantastic and romantic adventures, starring The Red Shoes' Moira Shearer, Robert Helpmann, Léonide Massine, and Ludmilla Tchérina. With every shot and cut imagined as a visualization of the music, the film has been cited by Martin Scorsese as a major influence on his editing of Raging Bull. The spectacular new 4K restoration of this 1951 Technicolor extravaganza is the most complete, crisp, and beautiful version of the film ever released in the United States."

Also, hopefully this means we will see a Criterion Blu-ray of The Tales of Hoffman sometime soon.

I went out looking for used blus at Half-Price Books today because they have 30-50% off coupons out right now, and ended up grabbing 'I Married a Witch' for $10, and put 'Wings of Desire' on hold to use with tomorrow's coupon If anyone has a Half-Price Books around them, it might be worth checking out.

I did that for City Lights, and it shipped the day before release date... for 36 dollars.
(I was very inexperienced with Amazon then.)

Half-Price Books is based out of Dallas, Texas, and most of their stores are in the Lone Star State. Their flagship store on Northwest Highway is mind-boggling; if you like books, movies, music, and collectibles, it's easy to spend an entire day looking through their stock and still not see everything in the store. I once lucked into a bunch of Criterion DVDs that had just been priced and were on a cart, waiting to be shelved, and greedily snatched up the eight or nine titles I didn't already own for $5.98 each And I can't count how many mint CDs I picked up on clearance for $2.00 apiece.

I don't miss a lot of things in Texas (people are a different matter), but I do miss Half-Price Books!

So, I finally got around to watching my Blu of Last Year at Marienbad.

It seems like something I would like, if there wasn't so much dialogue to read. I'm recovering from a head injury and still a little slower at reading than I'd like to be. I hardly had any time to look at the shots, because I couldn't take my eyes away from the subtitles.

So... Anyone want to teach me French?

Sullivan’s Travels release.

I just finished watching the film. The release uses as a foundation the same pre-existing master that was accessed for the overseas release. (I believe it comes via Universal). However, there appears to be some additional cleanup work done on the Criterion release. I will finish the supplemental features in the morning and we will post our review.

Have a great Thursday everyone
