Code Name: Melville is also present on Studio Canal's UK release of Red Circle, albeit in PAL SD.

Watched Carnival of Souls on Criterion DVD this past weekend, and wow, this is such a great little gem of a film! It would be nice to see it upgraded to Bluray one of these days. Any fans?

You heard half right. I liked Blithe Spirit quite a bit but it's not in the same league as the other films in the set. Brief Encounter is absolutely fantastic though.

Not a huge fan but yeah. I caught it on TCM last year (around Halloween, maybe? Bill Hader might have been doing the introductions that night too) and while I wouldn't go too far out of my way for a BD I wouldn't mind having it on my shelf.

I hope Criterion jumps on the multi-package thing and releases (upgrade to blu) Lean's directorial interpretations. Wouldn't it be cool if they did release a box set of both films? We can dream. Well, even if they just release them seperately is fine by me.
Those two Dickens films you mention are excellent but I'd also add two others from MGM in the '30s-A Tale of Two Cities and David Copperfield.

They could add upgrades for Hobson's Choice and Summertime. Laughton's character in Hobson's Choice is very Dickensian, and Summertime, well, just because.

You're right hoytereden, those are both excellent films as well, specifically Copperfield. Another excellent adaptation is The Life And Times Of Nicholas Nickleby made in 1947 from the great Ealing studios directed by Alberto Cavalcanti. He also directed the brilliant Dead Of Night in 1945 which I've seen mentioned in here hoping Criterion would someday get the rights to and do an amazing release.

belcherman, I completely agree with you on the Hobson's Choice reference to being Dickensian. Looking back, that film was one of my first blind buys with the famed Barnes & Noble Criterion sale. I love this movie! Laughton can do no wrong in my book, such a great actor.

Incidentally, that film also stars John Mills who also starred in Great Expectations (come on Criterion, upgrade is long overdue). Mills IMO was a bit too old for the role of Pip but that's another topic.

I just found out about the drawing that suggests My Beautiful Launderette.
Can't understand how I missed that.
Are there any other drawings of this year (besides the big new Year's drawing) that I may have missed as well?

I received my copy of Godzilla this morning, and it is indeed a brand new copy of the Criterion blu-ray. Quite a bargain, I think!

Yesterday i finally watched my copy of Satyricon and i am not sure what to think of it, i didn't totally hated it, but i didn't like that much either, certainly not sure why it got so much praise even from Fellini himself saying is one of his most accomplished works.

I thought it would be a much more loose film, this clearly follows a narrative and feels more like a Pasolini film like Medea or Oedipus Rex, just with less explicit sex, and also not as funny as his Trilogy of Life, i am not a fan of those Pasolini films so that may be my problem, but i didn't see what was so Felliniesque on this one, the odd thing is don't even remember noticing Nino Rota score which always adds a lot to the experience of Fellini movies for me, I thought Roma is infinitely better, and has all the things i come to expect from his films.

Will probably watch all the extras and see it once more down the line before deciding what to do with it.

Also watched another of my blind buys Saturday, it was The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant this one lived up to my expectations, but i probably still rank Ali: Fear of the Soul a bit higher, still in terms of themes i thought this was pretty unique, the acting was top notch and the cinematography amazing and with enough variations for such a limited space and considering the whole film occurs in that room.

Was thinking i will probably need to re-watch World on a Wire, i loved the cinematography in that one, but i thought the performances were very stilted and the pace too slow, maybe i just wasn't used to his films since it was my first.

I've been browsing around Reddit out of boredom and I came across these two threads. Hmm...make of them what you will, I guess.

I was kind of hoping it would be Satantango since it seems to be one of Bela Tarr most praised films, but after reading there is a much talked about scene
[Show spoiler]involving cat torture i am not sure i can see it

Not Criterion related, but it was confirmed on Twitter a month or two ago that Ryan's Daughter would be coming to blu this year as well, either from WB itself or Warner Archives.

Yes, Ravenus. It is good that now American viewers will also be able to see it.

And one note: A member PM-ed me to let me know that Criterion's site lists: "A booklet featuring an essay by critic Geoffrey O’Brien and a selection from Rui Nogueira’s 1971 book Melville on Melville."

The second part "a selection from Rui Nogueira’s 1971 book Melville on Melville" is not included with my press materials. But maybe they were prepared earlier and this was something that was just added up. I am going to check. Also, when the final market version of this release arrives, I will update the review with photos (so that people can see what is in the leaflet/booket).

Pro-B

For the first link the first 2 bullet points seem plausible. Points 3 and 4 are bull flop, imo.

Yeah I don't see the studio ever releasing a Lana Del Ray set.

Would prefer Lana Del Rey videos to Lynch's - its his worst work, everything he has done since Inland Empire has been awful...

Sia's recent videos would be nice :P!
