Something like that. Bowie is helping write, and will have existing Bowie songs and new Bowie songs. New York Theatre Workshop does great work. Very intriguing.

![]() Also its not a petty attack on a director, I adore Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly and found them very fascinating. Waking Life is incredible. I want to give his other films (especially that trilogy) a try ![]() Last edited by Polaroid; 04-03-2015 at 12:38 AM. |

I'm curious to see if you like the trilogy. I have a feeling you won't, but def give it a shot! I'm a big fan of them. When you watch then, do not watch all three back to back. Space it out each film by a couple days!

Just watched my copy of Interstellar last night. Classic film, its stature will definitely grow over time. Future classic for sure. Just an amazing film, loved the science and the emotion.
To make this Criterion related... Uh, I also loved Following. Great director, Christopher Nolan. |

![]() [Show spoiler] As for classics i am not really sure how a movie becomes one, all are classics considered masterpieces? or can they become classics by popularity alone? seems to me a lot of popular movies that aren't masterpieces are called Cult films. |

Having just finished rewatching America Lost and Found: The BBS Story and watching David Lean Directs Nöel Coward for the first time, I have come to the conclusion that Criterion should release each film separately, in addition to the box set, or at least guarantee the standalone releases at a future time.
I am an advocate for each box set to resemble André Gregory and Wallace Shawn: 3 Films, The Complete Monterey Pop Festival, and Yojimbo / Sanjuro, as it allows the buyer to pick and choose what films he or she wants without having to own everything. Yes, I understand that Criterion is thinking from a financial standpoint in terms of what will sell separately and what will sell better in a box set, but the option should be available or eventually be made available. I feel like the only exceptions to this rule are By Brakhage: An Anthology, Volumes One and Two, A Hollis Frampton Odyssey, Les Blank: Always for Pleasure, and Zatôichi: The Blind Swordsman. The first three that I mentioned have too many short films and would be a waste to release them separately (see Brakhage's 1 minute shorts), which Ichi feels too large to release in anything other than the box set. Regarding David Lean Directs Noël Coward, I liked the set. Some of the films exceeded all of my wildest expectations while others disappointed me. Although I truly admire This Happy Breed, I can only see myself ever watching Brief Encounter again (and I know others have voiced their opinions on this issue, as well). Regarding America Lost and Found: The BBS Story, I only find Easy Rider and The Last Picture Show worthy of owning as they speak the greatest to me about the change in the direction of the world and the death of generations before it. For some other examples, I know many, including myself, own The Qatsi Trilogy strictly for Koyaanisqatsi, one of the greatest documentaries ever made. While the other two films in the set are certainly not bad, they do not live up to their predecessor and can often feel like a chore. The Essential Jacques Demy set is also a set that I have recommended over the months and even with that one, I can only see myself rewatching Lola, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, and The Young Girls of Rochefort time and time again. Furthermore, I can almost guarantee that films in The Complete Jacques Tati would sell just as well as the set as Tati is an enormous popularity. Anywho, these are just my two cents on the issue. I was initially opposed to the re-issuing of Five Easy Pieces, but now I am almost hoping and praying that they continue in this direction. It would certainly nice to not only see re-issues (a la F.E.P.), but having options to purchase films in sets or standalones (a la Gregory and Shawn). |

Haven't seen much talk about La Ciénaga, has anyone seen it recently?
I thought it was excellent, it's one of those films that from the opening i somehow knew i was going to like the film, not exactly sure why, it clearly establishes the mood for everything that follows, even if not a lot of things are happening at some points, it always gives a sense that something bad is going to happen, hard to believe it is a director's debut film. I hadn't heard of Lucrecia Martel before the Criterion announcement, can someone recommend her newer films? Last edited by pedromvu; 04-03-2015 at 04:16 AM. |
