I'd love to read your thoughts on Two-Lane Blacktop when you get a chance to watch it. I think that it's a wonderful low-key film that can really grow on people. I'm in the mood to watch Two-Lane Blacktop again this week, in fact. I spent the past weekend revisiting the first six Fast & Furious films before seeing the seventh one at the theater, and that movie marathon put me in the mood for some older car chase favorites. I've got Thunder Road sitting on the Blu-ray player waiting to watch this week, and I might just throw in Two-Lane Blacktop and Dirty Mary Crazy Larry/Race with the Devil as well. I'm also in the mood to revisit a certain Italian Criterion title along these lines as well, but mentioning it overtly might spoil the fun for others. |

2nd Annual Criterion Bingefest
1. Crumb- #533 2. Something Wild- #563 3. Eraserhead- #725 4. Drive, He Said- #547 5. Slacker- #247 6. Life During Wartime- #574 7. Shallow Grave- #616 Fantastic movie from Danny Boyle. Not quite as good as Trainspotting, but very close. I don't want to say more and risk spoiling anything, but I must say that Ewan McGregor had his career ruined by Star Wars (name one thing he was in after 2005). 4.5/5 8. Schizopolis- #199 Interesting to say the least. I have no way to describe this to those who haven't seen it. It is an entirely unscripted series of skits pertaining to a series of characters, several of whom are played by Steven Soderbergh. A promising first half led to a disappointing second, only to be slightly redeemed by a satisfying ending. 3.5/5 9. The Fisher King- #764 This is going to be a release that I buy. I remember why I stopped watching though... It is a total bummer throughout most of the flick. Everyone gives a phenomenal performance, and the scene with Parry and Jack in the bed of the [Show spoiler] drove me to tears. As per any Gilliam, it is filled with fantasy sequences that suit the film very well. 5/5Coming soon! All That Jazz, Broadcast News, Two-Lane Blacktop, Walker, Withnail and I Last edited by demonknight; 04-23-2015 at 07:49 PM. |

I was just thinking of something:
Could we expect an a la Fanny and Alexander release of August's Best Intentions including the theatrical film and TV series? I had seen the film in my teens. Don't remember anything, but i would be interested in seeing it again. (actually I'd be interested in the TV series) Who has the rights, and is it something that Criterion could release? ![]() Last edited by filmmusic; 04-15-2015 at 01:00 AM. |

As for the Furious films... I saw the first two but never managed to watch anymore. Just couldn't get into them... too derivitive I guess. Or I just was feeling to snobby to watch anymore. HA! Speaking of Race with the Devil, did you ever see the BMW short film "Beat the Devil?" Is was part of The Hire short film series. It's not really related, but really just reminds me of it. As for the rest of the films, they are pretty good. If you haven't seem them, check them out. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hire And what about that Italian Criterion title...........???? ![]() |

McGregor continues to star in some amazing films. His career is far from dead. If anything, making Star Wars helped widen his fan-base and allowed for even more opportunities.
I know many of his best films were made pre-Star Wars but that doesn't mean his career ended after that. Far from it. |

[Show spoiler] It's an amazing film, and it was one of my most pleasant surprises in recent memory. The Fast & Furious movies are silly in so many ways, but I became attached to the characters more than I expected to a few years ago, and it's fun to watch the "family" of familiar faces from film to film. I've posted my thoughts in one of the main forum threads for the movies. I have not seen the BMW movie, Beat the Devil. My first thought was of the old Humphrey Bogart film. |

I've got a feeling about tomorrow.
Got a feeling we're gonna see Mulholland Drive. July is usually a big announcement month. |

And I know what you mean about being attached to characters... the films don't always have to be Oscar winners to have deep adoration for the characters. If you get the chance, the BMW shorts are all on the web, one particular video streaming site in particular. I got the DVD years ago when you could order from BMW for $5.00 or something. They star Clive Owen and have a ton of celebs making cameos. Some amazing directors signed on to direct each short film. They are all only 7 to 10 min or so each, but really worth those few minutes. |

Glad to know there's been a few. That said, I have only heard of two of them. Also, wasn't he in Mortdecai earlier this year? I just remembered. I may have exaggerated but, seriously, those movies are not nearly as well known as the phenomenal, better than the book Big Fish or the previously mentioned Trainspotting.

I'm pretty happy with my Japanese release of Mulholland Dr., although that appears to be out of print now. I'm really excited about Valerie and Her Week of Wonders. It's been a while since I was so stoked for a Criterion release. Of course I would still totally pick up a Criterion edition of MD.

I've recorded, but have yet to watch, Alias the Doctor and A Modern Hero, and I'm patiently waiting for TCM to show Massacre, which always seems to play on days during which my satellite reception is interrupted by thunderstorms. ![]() |

Shunya Ito directed the first three, and the ending of the third film felt like a conclusion.
A different director took over for the fourth entry, and it was not on par with what Ito had done (but still not bad, mostly due to the presence of Meiko Kaji). There were fifth and sixth entries, too, without Ito or Kaji. The fifth film starred Yumi Takigawa of School of the Holy Beast fame. |
