History has been made! A month without a single purchase by me. I've already got the Arrow Killers, and am set with my Hiroshima DVD. I'll definitely rent Laundrette and Here is your Life though.

People say this all the time, but we're still waiting for a ton of world cinema classics to come out.

I don't even know why Criterion is putting that motto about being "a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films" when the films that follow those guidelines are release few and far between. At this point, they just release whatever the hell they want to release.

I'm just tired of being disappointed each month.

All right!

I am more excited about the Blu-ray upgrade of The Killers than I have been about anything from Criterion this year, and I cannot wait to retire my DVD set. The 1946 film will look amazing in high definition. Here's to Ava Gardner in the Collection!

Hiroshima Mon Amour is also a win, and I will be adding it to my collection. Once again, I'm excited to replace an old DVD.

The Black Stallion is something out of the clear blue, and I'm really glad to see Criterion releasing it. I saw this movie during my childhood, and an early scene has haunted me since then.

Here is Your Life has potential.

I'm not really into My Beautiful Laundrette or Moonrise Kingdom, but a lot of other people are.

July has three must-haves, and that makes for a great month.

I can forsee Grand Budapest Hotel being announced next month, taking yet another spot away from a film that needs a release.
Perfectly valid, logical reasons as to why Criterion has released his films before most of theirs.

For one, all of those filmmakers are dead and have been for a few years which means its easier to get creative input.
On top of that all of their filmographies need more extensive restoration work as they're significantly older than the Anderson films which would need little if any work done on them at all.
Thats also not including rights issues to a lot of those films (at least in terms of Tarkovsky).

And as someone else already pointed out, the sales generated from the Anderson films help pay for all the restoration work on all those old classics.
Either way don't like them don't buy them, whining wont get the other films done any faster.

I agree. Seems like a waste releasing films like Moonrise, although I guess they make money.

And some people don't want them. We're all allowed to voice our opinions.
It's release day. I see people both happy and frustrated over what was announced.

Solid month. Anderson has his detractors, but he is definitely a modern auteur.

Happy about the Resnais, Troell, Frears, pleasantly surprised about Black Beauty.

I like but do not love either version of The Killers, but this is a good time to revisit.

Buying them all of course.

Before Moonrise Kingdom was announced, people moaned about them not releasing Moonrise Kingdom.

Solid month, and many have been waiting for Hiroshima Mon Amour for a long time. I was hoping for something to be really overly excited about but the months doesn thrill me but it isn't bad.

Things like Moonrise Kingdom or The Fantastic Mr. Fox aren't all that interesting and already have what seem to be perfectly adequate BD releases so I agree they seem like a waste of resources.

OTOH I doubt we're talking about a ton of resources so if a 'special relationship' with Wes Anderson makes somebody (or several somebodies) in New York happy then so be it.

That he is, and Criterion always do a great job with his films, so I'm really looking forward to adding this to my collection.
