I try to avoid this thread for a few days since everyone gets their period over the releases but this time it is nuts

If even half of you worked at Criterion we would get 100 releases every month!

Then maybe we should be offered a position.

Non-announcement-related...

My Criterion Blu-ray of Gimme Shelter arrived in the mail yesterday. I've been on a real Rolling Stones kick for the past few days, since acquiring tickets to see them in concert for the third time in my life. I wonder if the band depicted in this movie could have ever predicted that they would still be touring in 2015.

Also...

On a whim yesterday, I placed an order for the Samuel Fuller films, Shock Corridor and The Naked Kiss, since I've been slowly immersing myself more into the works of this director. I was able to buy both from Amazon for just over $40.

I'm not disappointed because it's almost assured to be announced and released eventually. I saw it in theaters and think it is decent Dardennes, but not among their best work. Still I'll enjoy the release because theirs are always good.

Welcome to the forum, by the way!

The La Grande Illusion avatar is good stuff. I also remember reading in another thread that you are a fan of the 1990s band, Ride. I've always been a huge fan, and I cannot wait to see the reunited band play here in Atlanta on May 8.

So would anyone heartily recommend My Beautiful Laundrette? The brief synopsis on the CC site piqued my interest. It made me think of This is England. Thinking this could be a good blind buy.

To offer a variation of another poster's opinion here:

I, personally, am glad that Hiroshma, Mon Amour got announced so we can move past THAT one.

Double bonus: That, along with Moonrise Kingdom being announced in the same month, reduces the chances of seeing Matthew Zoller Seitz's peahead anywhere in the vicinities.

I'd like to hear your thoughts when you get around to watching these. They've been on my radar for a while, but I keep passing over them for other releases that seem like safer blind buys.

I'll definitely write a few words about each of them. I got into Samuel Fuller through his film noir movies, but I also like his style in films like China Gate. His films tend to push political correctness buttons, but his moral compass is ultimately aligned in a positive direction.

I really need to "retire" from Blu-ray purchases for a few months, since I have a huge stack of still-unwatched discs after transferring to a new office a few months ago and having less time to enjoy the movies, so everything that Criterion releases for the next couple of months can wait until the July sale. I'd like to limit my purchases over the next few months to limited editions, limited-availability titles, and such. Fortunately, though, I've got plenty of good Criterion titles from this month coming to me from Amazon, along with the Samuel Fuller flicks.

Glad I never got around to buying the MGM Blu-ray though!
I like Karate Kid 2 also, that's why I used it for the example. It's a good sequel that bothered to put thought into continuing the arcs of its characters and got all the important actors back, but it's not considered a classic the way the first one is. I doubt Criterion's going to bother with the sequel, it's not like Yojimbo/Sanjuro where they're both big classics. Then again, I can't really think of any Criterion movies that have sequels that weren't also released by Criterion. Other than Repo Man/Repo Men! (the sequel was filmed like 30 years later so it doesn't count)

Moonrise Kingdom is my favorite Anderson film, so I'm right there with ya.

I can't wait to see what they come up with for the cover art. Maybe they'll get Eric Chase Anderson to do it (though, he didn't do the Fantastic Mr. Fox cover art).

I meant Repo Chick and had a brain fart cause they came out at about the same time and both had names that sounded like sequels. I also haven't watched either one

I have not seen This is England, but based on the description here, the two movies don't really sound all that similar - other than in a couple of minor ways. I could be wrong.

It's been years since I've seen My Beautiful Laundrette, but I remember really liking it.

Moonrise is probably my favorite in his whole filmography, which is saying something with how much I like Tenenbaums and Rushmore. I think it has a lot more genuine warmth to it than most of his other movies, which I find appealing. His movies are generally about weirdos coming together and tend to end with a big, happy group scene, but this one seems to be even more about that right from the get-go. Ed Norton's character in particularly is almost heartbreaking in his earnestness. He initially just seems like a typical quirky Anderson type, but by the end when he's giving his all to try and help I was just like I LOVE THIS GUY. Bruce Willis is also similarly warm and appealing here, I think it's one of his best characters. And I can relate so much more to the youthful romance between two awkward weirdos than I can to the main plot points of most of the other flicks, besides maybe Rushmore with the weirdo having an impossible, petulant, immature attraction towards a woman. :P

This is England was pretty heavy stuff. relative to TiE, MBL seems like it'd be a bit lighter. but race relations, skinheads, 1980's England, socio political stuff.. that's why I thought of TiE

I have it. It's barely watchable. For a DVD that's ... say it with me ... sixteen friggin' years old!!

It may not be popular, but as a companion to THE UNBEARABLE LIGHTNESS OF BEING, it stands among Kaufman's better films. IMHO.

good question.

I thought the same thing when the April titles were released. April has glorious Technicolor, film noir, one of the most revered French directors of all time, (multiple films from) one of the most revered Japanese directors of all time, the French resistance, an American classic, and a gritty crime story starring one of the coolest actors who ever lived.

that month definitely had me scratching my head.. couldn't imagine what people wanted if none of that piqued their interest.
