I wonder if we'll ever see Ikiru on blu-ray?

The dvd transfer is absolutely horrendous.

...does Criterion still have the rights?

...same question applies to Red Beard.

Criterion is still producing the DVDs (as they're still on sale on their website), so I'd say they still have the rights. I know that Ikiru is on the wish lists of many people here, myself included, so I hope we'll see an upgrade of that soon.

Whether Criterion still has the rights to something they previously released on DVD you can check easily enough...just go to their site and search for the title in question. If the DVD isn't marked "Out of Print", then they still have the rights.

(In the case of these two Kurosawa films, the answer is "yes".)

When (or whether) they upgrade most likely depends on the status of the elements at Toho.

I watched my Criterion Blu-ray of Gimme Shelter last night, since I'm going to see The Rolling Stones this afternoon.

Gimme Shelter is a visually-arresting film in so many ways, and, the violence and bad vibes of Altamont aside, it drives home one of the most pleasurable aspects of the concert experience, which is people-watching. I was born in 1972, and films like this give me a taste of what life must have been like for those in the 1960s, before we could use cell phones to find and meet up with our friends at concerts.

The Rolling Stones are quite mind-blowing during the Madison Square Gardens performances that kick off the film, and I love the footage of the backplays of the sessions from their album, Sticky Fingers. The concert that I'll be seeing tonight is part of a tour that celebrates a reissue of that album.

I'll be going through the special features later this week.

Indeed. I did a blind-buy on this cause I had a feeling it was already "highly recommended"!

When did you receive your coupons? I'm frustrated that I've yet to receive any, yet I am a member and used to get them all the time. Will be using them during the 50% Criterion sale.

Cool to hear the 40% sale is going on... I'm going to hold off for the 50% sale in July though! Good luck to all who partake in this month's savings.

Oh, and memo to self: Don't pull out a gun at tonight's Rolling Stones concert.

I've never been a Stones fan, but I did enjoy Gimme Shelter, if only for the Maysles' fly-on-the-wall approach to it. I like that they keep their interactions with their subjects to a minimum.

Their music always makes me happy without fail, although they've never been one of my absolute favorite bands. I've seen them twice before.

I don't dislike them, but my parents made me a Beatles but at a young age, and with that came a bit of a biased opinion against them lol.

I have heard they still put on a great show. Have fun tonight!

Back in the 60s, I actually preferred The Dave Clark 5 over both the Beatles and the Stones. These days, it goes Beatles, DC5, Stones. I find that I really like the earlier, bluesy Stones more than the later Stones.
