If you look at Wenders' career as a whole, it isn't that remarkable. He has more misses than hits. Of course one can say the same for many other directors too, like Coppola, for example, but that's a different story.
What do you think of Pina? I kept hesitating on purchasing this, and though I did watch the film once (I borrowed it from the library), the $49.99 price tag did put me off (though of course during the half-off sales, along with other coupons, its a good price point). Wenders eludes me as well... his filmography is not consistent. He has made some very ambitious films (just like fellow New German cinema director Werner Herzog has), but the consistency of his output, in an auteur-way, is not memorable. He gets involved in some very interesting film-art projects though. His recent collaboration on the documentary The Salt of the Earth, which I saw in theaters, was very nice however.

For those wondering, I paid $100. The auction was at $60 until someone bid up the price in the very last minute. It happens. Fortunately I had a high bid of $120 and they ran out of time. I've seen other auctions go for $60-80.
That's great. I was also bidding on one but got outbid at the last moment . Gonna try again in a about 2 weeks & hope I have better luck. Its awesome you were able to win it for that price

Does Night of the Hunter still come in a digipak?

Pina was also 3D don't forget so that probably allowed Criterion to charge more for what it really was. I love it but I am a huge fan of dance ^^, not seen in 3D though!

Pina is quite good, but I wouldn't rave about it personally. It's very well made though.

Yeah I've heard good things about The Salt of the Earth. Yes he is inconsistent, but so is Herzog. The difference is that when Herzog hits it out of the park you end up watching a film that is a totally unique experience. I don't get the same feeling with Wenders personally.

Wenders' problem is that he is too middle of the road, no pun intended! His films are generally too safe and uninteresting to really hit the mark in my view.

I saw it last month and it is very well worth a watch - some of it is extraordinarily beautiful and moving, but the trailer plays down what is a major element of the film, which is Salgado's coverage of varous tragedies in Africa in the 80s and 90s, including the genocide in Rwanda. It is a very difficult part of the film to watch and not really suitable in my opinion for its UK 12A rating.

WHERE ARE THE ANNOUNCEMENTS, DAMMIT!?!?!?!

I kid.

I'll definitely get The New World, even though I just bought it in December. I just can't say no to Malick. Can't do it.

I'd love to see the Before films, but somehow I have almost no faith that it will happen. Would be a wonderful surprise, though.

Like we were talking about earlier, updates of some silents like Pandora's Box or The Passion of Joan of Arc would be HUGE!

Oh, and someone mentioned The Tenant. I'd be all over that. Yes, please.

Well, it will be an interesting waiting game today, as it is every month. No matter how I feel about what's announced, I always enjoy the anticipation. I don't really celebrate X-Mas anymore. But that's kind of what it reminds me of: That feeling when I was a kid, waiting to see what Santa brought me!

I find that too stressful - it's like watching an eBay listing end, waiting for a sniper to steal your precious away from you! I prefer to go away and come back once the announcements have been made.

A bit early for it. They haven't announced in the morning in a couple years.

I'll have that same problem since the one I just purchased is sealed and unopened, hopefully in decent condition. The replacement cases seem even tougher to come by.

I think the $200 market for this release is a thing of the past.
To complete your collection are you getting the original digipacks and replacement cases? I.e. I have the digipacks of Third Man and Night of the Hunter. I assumed these were the more collectible because they were the original packaging. Perhaps I need to keep an eye out for the replacement cases as well.

Addictions/compulsions aren't based on logic, however.

ETA: Here's a column from IndieWire on 10 films that should be in the Collection. I haven't read it yet, as it just showed up on my Twitter feed. Anyways: http://www.indiewire.com/article/10-...ent=1439819146

I'll concur with the inclusions of Blow Up (1966) and Atlantic City on the list.

I remember when I first saw Atlantic City I wasn't a big fan of it. But that was many, many, many years ago. I definitely need to see it again before I can pass any sort of legitimate opinion.

Blow Up, OTOH, seems like a no-brainer to me. And I'm always happy to see more Antonioni in the Collection.

Blow Up would be nice, but I'd prefer The Passenger.
