I am rather apprehensive about In Cold Blood because of how disinterested I was during my screening of Capote.

Let your apprehension go. In Cold Blood is to Capote as Citizen Kane is to RKO 281 or Some Like it Hot is to Goodbye, Norma Jean.

That's good to know since In Cold Blood is the one I'm most interested in from these announcements.

So if I really enjoyed Capote, will I enjoy In Cold Blood?

I understand they're different representations of the same story, a story I find pretty interesting.

I love Capote, but how much you like or dislike Capote is entirely irrelevant of how you would like In Cold Blood.

The Apu Trilogy

The only one I haven't seen is The World of Apu which I'll see next weekend. I'm already in for this set. The first two are incredibly beautiful. Pather Panchali moved me with its beauty. I left the theater in a really good mood. Likewise, for The Unvanquished - that opening shot of the Ganges

In Cold Blood

Terrific book but I'm lukewarm on the film. Was really disappointed they didn't build up the small town aspect of the story and why the murders were so horrific.

Code Unknown

Have not seen it but I've loved everything I've seen from Haneke. Add in Binoche and it's a must.

Don't Look Back

Have not seen it but I love Bob Dylan. Was fortunate to see him live last November playing mostly from Tempest and he was terrific. Best cover of the month, too.

Ikiru

Wow. I haven't seen this one in a long time. I'm glad it finally go upgraded and I'm happy for the forum member that wanted it so badly. There's a scene early in the film that will break your heart. It's oh so subtle but very effective.

4/5 month for me.

It's a great movie, with a stellar performance by Robert Blake. I've read the book and seen the movie twice. I think the book is better than the movie, but not by much. I just find In Cold Blood hard to watch, however, knowing that it's based on true events and this is a story about an actual family that gets murdered and what happens to their murderers. Two viewings is enough for me.

Never seen Capote but I have seen, and enjoyed, Infamous. I forget who it was but I remember being told that was the better version of the story.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. I was using that as an example because they are about the same story. If you found Capote boring you might find In Cold Blood riveting. They are two different stories about the same true events, but couldn't be more different in style and pacing. The older film plays more like a well done thriller, with elements from noir thrown in. It is intense, and like Ray said, the ending is stunning. It'll be hard for people not to like In Cold Blood.

Damn...then I am in for 'In Cold Blood' and 'Code Unknown' too (I liked Hanake's Amour & Cache, specially Cache)

Great month then...

Gee whiz, guys! The venerable octagon and iScottie, both!

Okay, as I understand it, "uninterested" suggests that you have a lack of interest in a given subject (like boredom); "disinterested" means that you aren't going to feel one way or the other about a matter on the basis of prior investment, that you're not biased when asked to sit in judgment.

On the other hand, if iScottie doesn't hold stock in Sony Picture Classics, technically, that post still makes perfect sense.

I'll shut up now.

The restorations are beautiful though, and worth seeing on a big screen if they are playing near you.
What's the difference between "blind buying" the Criterion set, and "blind attending" theatrical showings of the films? At least in the former case, you can pick it up for half-price at B&N during their November Criterion sale, and if you don't like them, you can sell the BD set.

I first saw the Apu Trilogy back in the 90s at the Brattle Theatre (for those of you in the Boston area). Had never seen any of Ray's films before, and was absolutely astonished at how terrific they were.

One also has the option of buying (or renting, or watching on Hulu) the other three films of Ray's that Criterion has released, so as to get an idea of what his films are like.

I know the IMDb ratings are not everything, but all three Apu films are rated 8.0+. That's impressive for any boxed set from Criterion. The more I've looked into it the more I look forward to buying this set.

It's a terrific movie. Not convinced that it's $275 worth of terrific, though.

There's a blu ray of it, that's still in print.

Yes, but a mint example can be readily had for under $50. Not seen the Region B BD, which is less than $20 from Amazon UK. Probably should get a copy myself, although a Criterion upgrade would be great.
