One day I'll spend the required amount on a purchase of Last Year at Marienbad. I really want it, and I don't know why I haven't bought it yet. I mean, I spent a gazillion dollars on stuff like X-Men: Days of Future Past the Rogue Cut (which I like, btw).

I don't think my brain works right.

How much you willing to spend on it? When I look at prices I take in the quality of the release, the film itself etc - if a film is good I will spend a lot on it.

I have 5 different copies of Possession, most expensive was $80 I think but so worth it.

I have 4 copies of LYAM on DVD and 3 on Bluray haha, only because I wanted to get it in best condition possible so thought if I bought multiple copies i have a better chance, I love the packaging and design but its a delicate release as it can pick up dirt/marks easy .

Also managed to get the plastic case for it (same for The Man Who Fell to Earth), they are handy in these situations

I still think Criterion should offer replacements cases for all digipak release to please everyone, but oh well.

I may be a film snob but my god I am a sucker for superhero films lol - love XMEN despite how cheesy it can be, also the last few havn't been too bad, love days of a future past. I wish (was it fox?) they didn't rush Xmen First Class, could have been awesome.

Now, whether I want to learn to see it, that's a different question. Maybe I'm better off the way I am. But I'm genuinely curious. I always wonder, "What am I missing?"
I would guess she does multiple views and pauses a lot :P plus he probably has an epic set up

I've been married for 35 years and to paraphrase The Old Man in A Christmas Story-"Oh! She knows, she always knows!"
She's put up with countless "I gotta have" items from my various collecting interests over the years so I don't push too hard on my requests these days. I don't even go overboard on my movie poster purchases which has been my oldest collecting passion along with film collecting (started with 16mm) dating back to the mid '60s.

I have a sealed copy (that I bought in an Amazon sale for $18). So I could sell it for $100 and buy a used copy for $40? I could make $60 when I eventually decide to watch it

Anyway - great announcements! I'll be in for Apu, Dont look back, Ikiru and maybe Code Unknown. All will be blind buys

What degree of specificity were you hoping for, and did you think the film should have run longer than 2 hours and 15 minutes, or were there sequences you think should have been cut out to make room for this additional footage?
It all comes down to the amount of screen time given to the family prior to them encountering the killers. It's next to nothing. In the book there's much to learn about the family. I'm sorry for not being more specific as it's been several years since I read the book and watched the film.

I'm not crazy about the way Brooks adapts novels. Lord Jim is another misfire. How do you take Peter O'Toole and cinematographer Freddie Young and make a pedestrian film?

(even French New Wave I can't get into... but I do love Louis Malle's work, despite him being kind of non-new wave).

Still, I'll bookmark Duvivier and research a bit. Thanks!
In that case, as much as I love Duvivier, you probably should start with other filmmakers to get connected with the era. You've seen Renoir's two heavyweights, but there are others like A Day in the Country, La Bête Humaine, Boudu Saved from Drowning, and from there I'd go to Marcel Carné with Port of Shadows, Hotel du Nord and Children of Paradise. The latter is from 1945, but is very much in the style of poetic realist cinema.

For what it's worth, this was a vibrant period of cinema for the French, but even the New Wave disavowed them although they respected them. They just didn't like anything "Old."

I'd imagine Apu will come with a booklet in Tati-like packaging.

I'm envisioning The Apu Trilogy in a package that is pretty much identical to the 3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman set.
...which is pretty much identical to the The Complete Jacques Tati packaging, except with fewer movies.

The Apu Trilogy and the 3 Films by Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman set look almost identical in design. Sure, F. Ron Miller designed both, but they're eerily similar, which makes it kind of boring. I mean, even the font looks kind of the same.

Does criterion still have the rights to Peeping Tom? I don't have a region free BD player, and I'd love to own it

They've gone out of business. You should check out the last few weeks worth of posts in the DVDworldUSA thread on here.

Here's a sentence I never thought I'd be typing, but notable British paedophile Jonathan King makes his debut in the collection via the supplements for In Cold Blood. I've emailed Criterion to see if they're aware of his reputation and infamy.

Extremely excited about the great Satyajit Rays Apu trilogy. There is a reason he is held in such high regard. Its amazing they held onto the negatives that were burnt in the fire for so long.

http://www.avclub.com/article/how-fi...ck-life-218781

Can't wait for Ikiru, but I have to say I'd rather have gotten Stray Dog. I feel this film would benefit the most from a new restoration and transfer. The current CC DVD is extremely muddled and soft and the audio is in need of some work as well.

In Cold Blood is another must have for me.

Never seen the other films, but Code Unknown seems like a no brainer to me.

Thank you for the explanation. Of course, I don't quite agree with your assessment; I think a great deal of the horror surrounding the murders is that we the audience ... like the murderers ... aren't too familiar with the victims. (Thus the title, In Cold Blood.) Even in the book, although we followed the Clutter family around on what would prove to be their last day of life, and were provided with some background about their individual personalities and habits, we didn't really get a whole lot of intimate detail.

I do think that Lord Jim is awful. I hated the movie almost as much as I loathed the book. (My four-word mini-review, "Lord Jim bored him," applies equally to both.) But I think it was an anomaly in Brooks' career. He was, after all, nominated for the Best Screenplay Oscar five times, winning once for Elmer Gantry; and the Writers Guild nominated him seven times ... he won their award for Elmer Gantry, but was also given their Career Achievement Award.

Awards are admittedly a shaky indicator of good work, but it's hard to deny the quality of Brooks' screenplays for Brute Force, Crossfire, Key Largo, Blackboard Jungle, Something of Value, Elmer Gantry, The Professionals, The Happy Ending and Looking for Mr. Goodbar. Despite its flaws, I even grudgingly admire his adaptation of Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof; its problems have more to do with the Code than his talents.
