and I don't have mine by spine number. I like it better by year. Then I know exactly what part of what shelf to go to if I want to watch something from any certain year. Plus I have DVDs separate and digipacks are separate too.
Spine numbers don't help me
I think organising them by spine number would only work if you were to collect every single title released. I used to have my Criterions arranged by year, but now I have them arranged by director, and then their films chronologically. It's really satisfying!

Crowther's a moron, but Ikuru's last 45 minutes are torture. It just goes on and on and on, completely redundant. Kurosawa is already one of the most Americanized Japanese directors, and with this film he reaches a Spielbergian nadir of treacly sentiment.

You have a lot of people that still buy DVDs that's why. My nearest Target actually has a DVD section that's much bigger then the BD section. And at my local B&N the CC DVDs have almost an entire wall while the BDs have half of a big shelf that they share with the horror & foreign movies.

No, they don't still have the rights. That's why the DVD is OOP.

It really chaps me to agree with Bosley Crowther and Bob Kramer in the same post. I adore Ikiru, but I do agree that unlike other Kurosawa films of similar length, it does *feel* long.

I owned the Criterion DVD of Ikiru, and I'm looking forward to upgrading the movie to Blu-ray.

Without revealing spoilers, I'll say that the final scene touches a nerve with me, because I've worked for state government for over 19 years, and have seen a lot of the behaviors witnessed in the movie. When the end credits roll, I'm always pumped up to give 100% effort to my job. (However... I confess that I have to revisit the film quite often as such to get my fix to stay enthused at work.)

I don't know what video you watched. With 15,000 titles in his collection, I am amazed that he doesn't have MORE crap.

It's hard to collect 15,000 movies. They can't all be Citizen Kane.

Has anyone else experienced a problem with the sound while watching The Friends of Eddie Coyle? There is a deep, bass rumble underneath and coinciding with all the dialogue throughout the entirety of the movie. It sounds like wind blowing over a microphone, if I had to describe it.

I haven't seen anyone mention it here. Is it possible that my copy is simply bad? That seems unlikely to me.

No issues with the audio.

But some of the night scenes have this horrific vertical flickering light thing going on.

I'm not even quite sure how to describe it, but it's an awful flaw in the transfer or the print or whatever.

PS...I have my copy in perfection condition on sale in the Criterion buy/trade thread!!!!

Thank you for posting this entire quote as I had only heard the "sun or the moon" part. I haven't had a chance to post since the Apu news broke yesterday, but now that Kurosawa has chimed in, there doesn't seem to be too much more to add.

Someone posted about the Apu films as being "inaccessible." That's probably the last word I'd use to describe Ray and his films. Ray's style is effortless. He makes the most mundane subject matter seem fascinating. The themes are universal and the narratives are straight forward. He was a master screenwriter, too. How well the dialogue is written is one of the first things that jumps out at you when watching a Ray directed film.

Who knows if people will feel the same way about Ray and Apu, but this release is what the Criterion Collection is all about.

I recieved and watched my copy a few weeks back. Didn't notice any audio issues. Plan to watch it again soon so I'll keep an ear out.

Have to say this was a big surprise this month. I immediately had the Subterranean Homesick Blues video in my head when I read the announcement. It is a great cover image, he looked so cool back then. I thought choosing the film was in keeping with the Monterey pop set, Beastie Boys video collection, and A Hard Days Night.

It is easy to pick a movie from a collection and thrash somebody, if that's what you want to do...

My copy of Day for Night arrived in the mail while I was at work today; hopefully I'll be able to watch it sometime this weekend.
