I'm sure you could get a Nick Redman & Julie Kirgo interview, they'd probably just charge you $100,000 and show up late.

I'm sure it's only a matter of time before Mulvaney becomes real in the form of a chatbot or something. Maybe he is now, in e-mail form. Either way, he's got to be or will become an artificial intelligence, just like HAL 9000. Or SkyNet...

I was curious if there are different versions of the film, but from what I can see it's always been a 28-minute short. If Criterion does a stand-alone release for it, I'd be curious as to what it would entail - more extras, or combined with another feature, or something else? ![]() I'm just wondering, probably won't find out for a while. |

Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence - by the great Ryuichi Sakamoto Paris, Texas Main Theme - the most gorgeous slide guitar ever by the masterful Ry Cooder ![]() Cancion Mixteca - with vocals in Spanish by Harry Dean Stanton (who knew old Harry had such a beautiful voice) The haunting music to Larisa Shepitko's masterpiece The Ascent Main theme - by Alfred Schnittke (played here over a moving montage video of scenes from the life of the Russian director, who died young in a car crash after making this, her final film) Dazed and Confused ![]() One of the most awesome soundtracks ever. Too many great songs and videos online. But here is one: Anatomy of a Murder One of the highlights of the film is the score. First rate jazz soundtrack with Duke Ellington. Sample is called Flirtibird. Odd Man Out And just about any of the Japanese films in the collection have awesome soundtracks, from wicked cool noirish jazz to traditional instruments and soaring orchestral pieces to trippy psychedelic jazz-rock. Love the music to Tokyo Drifter, Pale Flower, Harakiri, Seven Samurai, The Hidden Fortress, etc. but one that always sends chills up my spine is the theme to Godzilla. Many of the earlier titles on that list are in the public domain and have been released on DVD in North America by a variety of companies, ranging from Alpha Video to MGM/UA. The MGM DVD of The Ghoul (1933), for example, features an exemplary transfer and is still in print. Hitchcock's Secret Agent has been released by several companies; I own the long out-of-print AMC Classics DVD which was (minimally) remastered and looks okay ... good enough to hold me until Criterion or another company gives it the treatment it deserves. Merrily We Live is out there and still available, although the transfer is abominable. |

As far as soundtracks/scores of Criterion titles go, I have to tip my hat to the Miles Davis score for Elevator to the Gallows.
In other news... Just in case some of you didn't get enough of James Mason in the Criterion film noir title, Odd Man Out, or Trevor Howard in the Criterion film noir title, The Third Man, Kino has just released their five-film British Noir DVD box set. ![]() $38 and change, including shipping, from the Blowitoutahere site. |

On the other hand, my favorite soundtrack (as opposed to score) is an easy one to identify. It's the inimitable Nashville (1975). The performers all wrote their own material (Keith Carradine won the Oscar for his song, "I'm Easy". Most of the songs smack delicately of parody, and yet they're all catchy and fun to sing. My favorites are the handful written and sung by Ronee Blakley, including "Dues", "My Idaho Home" and "Tapedeck in His Tractor (The Cowboy Song)" ... she gave one of the best performances by a supporting actress in any film, ever. |
