Slacker includes Linklater's first feature film, It's Impossible to Learn to Plow by Reading Books, as an extra. So, technically, Scarface32 is right, Criterion has released 3 of his films.

And on laserdisc before that, they even had a "Criterion Television" sub-imprint, with five releases, three of which were the original set of Tanner '88, and the other two being "samplers" of episodes and extras for I Love Lucy and The Addams Family.

And by the by, there's nothing "un-legit" about Fanny and Alexander.
Oh, I didn't mean it that way. Just that Fanny & Alexander isn't really a show. Good to know about their stance on tv shows.

Thank you. I almost pulled the trigger on this around £28, so £19.99 was an easy sell. Got this at the same time as well.

If I remember correctly I think Head is the one rumored to go OOP, as one of the special features from that disc wound up on the Five Easy Pieces standalone release.

yeah, doesn't look like he's gonna be able to tell you about it right now as his profile is suspended. I think somebody upset him on the unpopular opinions thread.. something about the Danny Boyle Steve Jobs movie, I think.

Y'know, I made an interesting goal for my collection. Have nearly equal amounts for both Criterion Collection Blu-rays and ARROW UK ones. Was also going to have it include the Eureka Masters of Cinema too but since I only have one title from their label, I decided it'd be best not to at the moment.
For Criterion it's usually the prices which put me off and the last few I've purchased have been through a local Used Bookstore which also sells Blu-rays, DVDs, VHS, CD, LP, SACD, etc. which I were able to get for reasonable prices. Honestly I'm hoping if there's a Criterion sale on, which I think there is right now, I'd be able to get all four of the Alfred Hitchcock currently released through Criterion. But those would be in my Alfred Hitchcock collection, not in my CC one. Maybe finally begin my much needed Akira Kurossawa upgrades, which I've been putting off since 2008.
Ive not bought any Criterions in a while - UK prices seem to have shot up and its too much, if they were DF with booklets then th price would have been mor justified but I cant justify it.

Ive spent a lot of time updating my Arrow and MoC collection - getting a little obsessed with Arrow though haha, and the prices are amazing!

But that was my point. It was a show. It was originally developed as a four-episode TV series. There's a tendency to not consider a mini-series as a "real" TV show, but I don't see why not. Some "mini-series" actually run longer than a lot of "on-going" series.

so I dumped the TSPDT top 1000 list into an Excel file and have noted all the h films that I have seen. I picked up a new copy of Yi Yi on eBay for a nice price and noticed that the film is ranked #123 on the TSPDT list. I thought that maybe it was towards the bottom of the list. this high of a ranking surprised me as it seems to me to be a title that doesn't get talked about much around here.

anyway, I'm excited even more so now to see it for the first time.

For me lately, as I've mentioned possibly, Arrow seems far more affordable to me lately compared to Criterion. Hell, there are several if not a dozen if not more, titles released by both Arrow and Criterion which I have zero problems with having both releases in my collection. Which one goes into the collection first is only the matter of overall pricing, of which Arrow Video UK is currently in the far lead right now.
Already I'm organizing the Arrow UK releases alphabetically, the CC and MoC by spine number. Even if I had my own dream company, along the likes of the three mentioned, I'd just have the last three or four digits really small on the spine for the catalog release sorting information. No idea if I'd number them individually.
As an aside, I'm organizing my Alfred Hitchcock collection based on release date, from earliest to latest.

Great, Variety can't get things right.
I've been loading up on the Arrow sale, but not sure I'm seeing that much of a price difference. The very cheapest options in the Arrow sale (at least for blus) are coming out to be $12-13 shipped, and box sets notwithstanding I never spend more than $18 for a Criterion, usually a bit less.

that's why I didn't buy anything from them during this sale. my CC buys are usually in this price range.

they have a few titles that CC doesn't, but they have way too many cult-y, B grade titles for me to get overly excited about their product.

I can respect that. Of their 13 pages of sale items, there were a good 11 pages of titles I had no interest in. I still was able to find a few with dropping some money on.

(Actually I also picked up Retaliation and Massacre Gun, but since they already arrived they aren't listed. Lady Snowblood would have been a no brainer as well if not already in my collection.)

Yes, many titles are being revisited when they were originally released through them way back onto Laserdisc and should NEVER be considered "new" or never before in the CC when they're released again onto Blu-ray. Even if it skipped over DVD.
People should do more research and they keep negating Laserdisc. (Which Criterion and a few other companies started the Bonus Features on the format. Hell, the very first ever commentary was on KING KONG, which I have either as AC3 or MP3 on my computer.)
Considering that Laserdiscs are no longer in production and that the entire numbering system reset when DVDs came on the market, I think it's a little harsh of you to criticize me for not knowing that Boogie Nights was released in the Collection. While I do agree with you that I could have done some research on the subject, I think you have to realize that Laserdiscs aren't really in the public eye nowadays, and are really only thought of by those who have collected them in the past or at least are familiar with them; I have never even seen a Laserdisc in person. You obviously know a bit about Criterion's Laserdisc releases, but my ignorance doesn't really warrant such a response.

I was at the ripe old age of 6 when the Laserdisc of Boogie Nights was released, and, by that time, VHS and DVDs were the main products on the market.

With the advent of DVDs, the numbering system changed, and so a different Collection was created. I don't see why Laserdiscs and DVDs/Blu-rays can't be considered separate...

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

Watched Limelight and now consider it my second favorite Chaplin film behind The Great Dictator. I tend to like his later films more than the more physical comedies.

Very appreciative of the dialogue and especially the very poetic ones on life. The talent in writing, directing, starring and even composing for this movie is unbelievable.

Fantastic supplements and top notch Criterion title.

I won't get into what Ray_Rogers said, but I want to explain why I responded with a link to the LD release.

Like RR -- but perhaps with a bit less fervor -- I find it bothersome to see LD being disregarded when it comes to Criterion simply because it's an old, out-dated format. Everything that Criterion is today, its reputation, its pioneering efforts in the home video industry -- and with all that, arguably the reason why there are over 134K replies in this very thread -- are because of what they did with the laserdisc format.

And that includes their "mission statement", which is to bring to home video great works but great filmmakers. When I saw you suggesting that PTA, and Boogie Nights in particular, would be a great choice to include in the Collection, my response was essentially saying, "Well, yes, and Criterion would agree with that statement, because as evidence, I point you to..."

A lot of people ask why Criterion doesn't have X film or Y filmmaker in the Collection, and in a lot of those cases, they did back in the LD days. The trouble is that Criterion has to license most of what they release. Laserdisc was such a niche format that it was easier to get the studios who owned the films to let Criterion release them. When DVD came along, and was a mainstream format, Criterion lost the rights to a lot of titles because the studios wanted to keep them in-house. Boogie Nights is a sterling example of such.

So, that would be the more likely explanation for PTA's absense from the Collection. But the existence of that LD is proof that Criterion considered him and that movie to be worth having in the Collection.
