I tear up in Friday the 13th IV when Crispin Glover asks for the corkscrew. Knowing he'll never get to use that corkscrew makes me bawl like a baby.

Stronger man than me. I cried like hell at the end the first time I saw that movie. I also remember crying a lot at the end of "Stand by Me" when I was a kid.

It's honestly the critique of the food industry that affects me the most.

Rosemary and her husband are fed "contaminated" food by their neighbors, food which has a series of unforeseen and unimagined consequences. If you think about all of the chemicals that are pumped into the meat and produce on a daily basis today, it's quite disheartening.

Polanski really knew his stuff.

When is the review for The Apu Trilogy going to be up? I'm looking forward to read it.

I cried at the end of The Earthling (1980) when I was a kid. I really really wish that this movie would land on Blu-ray someday, although it's a tall order, because it was never even released on DVD.

I don't cry often while watching movies, but I do get a lump in my throat from time to time. Bicycle Thieves and Forbidden Games win my votes for the saddest films in the Criterion Collection, and they both conjured this reaction with me.

Incidentally, I just finished revisiting Home Alone for the first time in ages, by way of the new 25th Anniversary Blu-ray, and I got a lump in my throat at the end, when Kevin is looking out the window at his neighbor, the old man who has reconnected with his son.

Bicycle Thieves is a soul crusher. And if that one doesn't get you Sciuscia or Umberto D. will.

Yikes!! Someone should have clued in Ben Mankiewicz as to how to pronounce Satyajit Ray's name and the title 'Pather Panchali' too.

If I feel that way about those films, is there any reason to think I might feel the same way about the Apu Trilogy?

...or is it apples and oranges?
I've seen Tokyo Story. If I had to guess, you'd watch PP once, although (as is made obvious by my avatar) I find every shot of PP enthralling.

Ozu's camera moves once in TS... I know there's a lot more to it, but PP has amazing cinematography. So I guess it's apples and oranges.

I thought I had a bead on you, Ray, but there's always outliers and surprises. I'm stunned that you liked Ali. W/ that said you have the right plan to at least sample what your DVR is recording right now and making a decision.

Why are you watching it on TCM?

Did you not purchase the Criterion set?

With respect to Ali...I've fallen deeply in love with Fassbinder's style of shooting.

Even if the movie is relatively dull in terms of story (Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant) the movies are still beautiful to watch because of the production design and how he uses the camera.

...I now consider myself to be a loyal soldier in the Fassbinder army.

Going off the quality of Studio Canals "Third Man" restoration, Ran should look incredible.
And the blu ray for it is in the works as we speak according to MichaelB who said he participated in the interviews for the special features.
Stoked for it to come out

I know its 99% probable that its Christian Petzold's Phoenix, but you know what would be incredible to see? Arizona Dream, starring Johnny Depp and directed by Emir Kusturica.

Is there not a demand for some Kusturica? Who else likes his work besides me and Jim Jarmusch?

There is a blank page for him on Criterion.com too! https://www.criterion.com/people/119684-emir-kusturica

The ending of The Dirty Dozen. Makes me bawl like a little baby every time I see it. When James Brown is running flat out, hurling grenades down the air vents, blowing Nazis all to hell, running so hard to get to the truck as it drives away, trying to reach his buddies, when suddenly......and Franco yelling so happily "we made it" and then a shot rings out and .....and......I just....can't....continue. I want to cry just writing about it.

That would be awesome. I'd love to see a BD of the extended 140 minute cut. "Arizona Dream" is a fantastic film. Unfortunately, it's with Warner Archive, who seem to keep an iron grip on everything they own and release BDs at a glacial pace.

The Double Life of Veronique

A Woman Under the Influence

Watership Down

Eraserhead

Koyaanisqatsi

Breaking the Waves

The Great Beauty

Markets Lazarova

The Thin Red Line

Mishima

Some of these are tears of joy and just seeing overwhelming beauty (you can guess which). Most are genuine sadness though.

Jellyfish Eyes made me want to cry because it was so bad, does that count?

Ooooh Criterion has updated website and added 'Current Posts' to homepage, sweet.

None to be honest. Unless they happen to be tears of boredom from watching a movie I don't like

I wish it were that easy. The movies with damaged packaging have come from multiple sources. For instance, they sent me three copies of A Streetcar Named Desire. All exhibited similar damage. One was shipped by UPS. One Dynamex. The third by the USPS.

The first Giant copy I received was pretty roughed up. That was part of a larger order in a box, and the other movies inside were find. Giant, though, was really rough.

The pictures really don't do the damage justice.

I bought a copy of ex Machina, and the side of the slipcover was torn all the way through. That was packaged in a box with my Ultimate James Bond collection, which was in bubble wrap.

Amazon has been good about replacing them. From now on, if I buy a moie with a digibook, I'll just buy three copies, take the best, and return the other two unopened for refund. I told them that if I get damaged movies I am paying full price for, they will be going back. They had no problem with that.
