Kurosawa always has things to say in his post war contemporary films about the whole Westernization thing Japan went through. While there are aspects of it I am sure he loved, you can tell there are other parts he was no fan of.
Ironic, considering the fact that I've often seen him described as the most "Western" of the well-known Japanese directors of that era.

...so much so that it actually affected his popularity in Japan.

Theres nothing really scary about The Brood Ray. Its an ok movie but I personally found a big part of the middle very slow moving before it picks up again at the end. Im glad to own it since I enjoy Cronenberg's films but its somewhere near the bottom of the pile for me. Not sure how many times ill actually rewatch it.

The cover for "Cries and Whispers" is conceptually similar to the cover for Joyce Carol Oates's "High Crime Area." (A woman shot through a blood red filter.)

The book's jacket was designed by Royce M. Becker and its photo is copyrighted by Mohammed Itani/Trevillion Images.

I found it to be very disturbing. Obviously how one responds to horror is subjective, but I found this to be incredibly affecting.

Like a few others have said, I didn't particularly find The Brood to be all that scary (or a good movie, really, but I've found that Cronenberg's films just aren't for me). There's a disgusting point in the end, at least for me, but, other than that, the film was harmless.

Scary...no. Incredibly disturbing...yes. I still need to watch Dead Ringers and Naked Lunch, but so far The Brood is my favorite Cronenberg on Criterion.
I'm saving Naked Lunch to do a double feature with Burroughs when it is released in a couple of weeks.

I finished Here is Your Life last night. I viewed this after CriterionBlues did his podcast on the film this week.
168 minutes. 168 minutes! I like slow movies, but Troell makes Ozu look like JJ Abrams. There very easily could have been 1 hour cut from the movie and I don't know that it would have made a lot of difference.

Worth the watch for a few really nice scenes. I've been known to tell my kids that lazy people are not worth their space on this earth, so the work theme was a plus for me. The artsy parts seemed a little sporadic, but this was Troell's first film which is amazing to realize as you view this.

I have mixed emotions now awaiting The Emigrants and The New Land in February. On one hand I'm anxious to see where he took his directing. On the other, each film is approximately 30 minutes longer than Here is Your Life. I have not watched Everlasting Moments either.

If you're 12 years old or younger, then there's a possibility that you might be slightly disturbed. Older than that, though, I think you're going to find it tough to get a "genuine scare" by movies unless jump scares are part of the film.

I think there is one or two tense moments/jump scares in the Brood. Regardless of scares, it definitely is an unsettling movie. Classic Cronenberg.

If you're talking about movies in general not being scary, I have to strongly disagree.

I'm 23 and many many films make me scared, they don't even have to be labeled as horror films. On the other hand my twin brother doesn't find anything scary, in fact some time ago we watched Mulholland Drive together. I wanted him to see it because I think it's the scariest film I've ever seen but he thought it was just a drama.

But generalising that adults don't find films scary is just false.

Patronising nonsense.

If anything it's the opposite; jump scares might work on a more naive audience but it takes something more cerebral to really freak out the seasoned viewer.

Happy Birthday Jean-Luc Godard! 85 today!

Incidentally Slow Motion is my favourite Criterion release of 2015.

I too really don't know what to expect from The Emigrants and The New Land, I find his two other films in the collection to be just ok.

I think Here's your Life started pretty good, and the high-point for me has to be the memory scene that plays out like a dream sequence of the old man I think in the first 30 minutes of the movie, then it started to become a pretty standard coming of age story for me.

I remember years ago PBS showing The Emigrants and The New Land back to back (on consecutive nights, I believe). I don't know if they were showing the complete films or an edited version that was shown in America, I'm guessing the latter, but both films held my attention for the whole showing.

Wish someone (I'm looking at you, Warner Brothers) would release Zandy's Bride on blu.

If you want the ultimate, you have to be willing to pay the ultimate price.

Regarding Cronenberg, do we have any idea if we will see more of his films from Criterion? Did Criterion obtain the rights to all of his films or just a few of them? I would love to see Shivers get released at some point.

Sure it is.

What about people with gambling addictions who gamble their houses, careers, marriages, and lives away?

Not the same thing.

People who gamble their lives away do so because they hate themselves.

Not because they love themselves like I do.

I'm taking a surfing trip to Australia next month so I can surf Bells Beach for the first time.

...because I love myself and I want to live.

...unlike those dead souls inching along in their metal coffins.

It's the same reason why I make so many Criterion blind buys.
