I agree with The Killing, amazing script and execution, Sterling Hayden is phenomenal and the ending is like a punch in the stomach.

Pickup on South Street is my other favorite CC noir; made me a huge Richard Widmark fan, here as the establishment-snubbing anti-hero.

I've been hoping Criterion would release it on Blu. I'm a big fan of the genre.

I'm still holding out hope for an upgrade of Olivier's Hamlet.

An overlooked noir in the collection is "Blast of Silence". Doubt it gets a BD upgrade anytime because it's a pretty low-profile title. But it's a really raw, gritty, low-budget early 60s noir about a hit man attempting to carry out a job in New York City. The narration in the film fits right in with the cold, bleak New York City that the film portrays. I recommend checking it out if you haven't seen it.

Also think "Rififi" deserves mention among the best film noirs in the collection. That's an absolutely fantastic film, although it may not fit the definition of film noir in the most strict sense.

It has to be one of the most beautiful and haunting horrors ever made, I would say it is a must have for anyone interested in film, the acting, the cinematography, sound design, visuals are at its best.

Please don't upset me again...

Best Welles resource. I can't vouch for the quality versus other sources, but likely to be the best available.

Okay, you Douglas Sirk aficionados, I'll be in New York during a 16/35mm retrospective and would greatly appreciate if I could get some recommendations. I've only seen All That Heaven Allows, which I adored for all the right reasons, and have been itching to see more ever since.

All I Desire
Battle Hymn
Captain Lightfoot
La Habanera
Imitation for Life
Interlude
Magnificent Obsession
Shockproof
Sign of the Pagan
Sleep, My Love
There's Always Tomorrow
Written on the Wind

The obvious one is Magnificent Obsession (not sure I can pass up a print of All That Heaven Allows, either), but from thereon out my Sirk knowledge is little to none. Again, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I just watched Sleep, My Love the other night and found it to be a pleasant surprise. It has a really good cast, and Sirk does a serviceable Hitchcock impression. It's not his best film by any means, but it's probably the best of his thrillers.

My recommendations coincide with filmmusic's, except that I would also add All I Desire, which features an outstanding performance by Barbara Stanwyck, some great cinematography, and some classic Sirk themes.

As an under-the-radar pick, I'd go with La Habanera, which is a thinly veiled propaganda film before he left Germany. It is very different than his American work, but you can get a sense that Sirk could make a good film under demanding circumstances.

Dorothy Malone was such a hoot in Written on The Wind. Fingers crossed that Criterion releases this.

Say no more. She's one of my favorite actresses, if not my favorite.

'Written On The Wind' definitely.
I would of chosen 'A Time To Love And A Time To Die' & 'Has Anybody Seen My Gal' but they are not on the list

Speaking of film prints, I had the pleasure of seeing some of my Criterion favorites in 35mm this past weekend (and an inevitable release, I hope.)

Widmark knocks it out of the park as Harry Fabian, but I wasn't too keen on the plot.
