I've been obsessed myself ever since I saw the film last Saturday night, and if there is only one criticism I have to say about it, JJ Abrams is not as original as he could be. He paid homage to Spielberg with Super 8, he paid homage to Roddenberry with Star Trek and now he paid homage to Lucas with Star Wars. I still loved the movie (giving it 3.75 out of 4), but the film gave me this vibe of trying hard to please fans, and not give enough surprises, as it was a loose retelling of Episode IV (and V). |

I wondered about that myself. But if you look up stills from The Emigrants and The New Land online, the ship in the cartoon is totally different from the one Liv Ullman and company sailed in on. Accordingly, I still think the hint applies to The New World; the ship in that film matches the one in the cartoon almost exactly.

I have to say though, that while the 3D (we saw it in IMAX 3D) was neither here nor there for most of the film, there were a few isolated shots where it was really impressive. |

It's worth noting, though, that I was six when I saw the first film in 1978, and, therefore, right smack in the target audience. The problem with my generation is that we tend to put the Original Trilogy on too high of a pedestal, bècause the movies really are sort of daft when I really try to analyze them. We see the old Star Wars movies through rose-tinted nostalgia lenses, and, when new Star Wars movies are released, we hold them up to standards that the old movies never actually delivered. When I revisited all six of the earlier movies on Black Friday, I was reminded that the Prequel Trilogy is not actually that bad, and the Original Trilogy is not actually that good. I just think that they're all awesome, though, because I grew up with them. Last edited by The Great Owl; 12-24-2015 at 07:13 PM. |

I'm going to be AFK until at least Friday night, if not Saturday morning, so I want to wish you all a great holiday -- secular and/or spiritual, according to your desires.

Have to respectfully disagree with this. The prequels really are that bad. And the original trilogy really is that good. ...even if it's not necessarily perfect. |

I just think that it's a notch below the other two. The Special Edition alterations had the most detrimental effect on Return of the Jedi sadly. |

On Star Wars again.... I originally gave this 4 out of 4 stars but due to some of my comments above I demoted it to 3.75 after I digested more of this film over the last few days.
I have to admit though, that final sequence, which I will not spoil for those that haven't seen it yet, is one of the greatest in any Star Wars film. I had great fun and was on the edge of my seat... its just making me look so forward to the next film, written and directed by Rian Johnson. Anyone have any opinion on this guy by the way? I realize now that many of us didn't care for the prequel movies because we didn't care about the characters! Yet, with The Force Awakens, many of our beloved characters we grew up with as kids and young adults, having waited 32 years to see them again, was beyond a thrill I can't even put into words. Last thing for now... finally, no children in this new Star Wars film! About time! ![]() |

When I left the theater, I was feeling more of a 3.87, but now am leaning more towards a 3.84.

I was 8 when the original came out, so I am very much part of the SW generation as well. |

Have you made it to Zatoichi goes to the Fire Festival? That one is almost a horror movie and may be my favorite of the bunch.
