I know I am biased but I still can't get over Hugo won best cinematography over The Tree of Life.

Anyway 2011 nominations were still a joke, considering there was no nomination for best picture of arguably the best of that year: A Separation.
At least A Separation won in best foreign film category and received another nomination in original screenplay category...Getting Main Best Picture nomination for a film that's not in English is always dicey...

How about 1975 as the best? "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", "Barry Lyndon", "Jaws", "Nashville" and "Dog Day Afternoon". Wow. 1976 wasn't too bad either, with "Rocky", "All the President's Men", "Bound for Glory", "Network" and "Taxi Driver".

Compare that to 2011, which is a contender for worst. There were 9 nominations for best picture. "The Artist", "The Descendants", "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close", "The Help", "Hugo", "Midnight in Paris", "Moneyball", "The Tree of Life" and "War Horse". It's incredible the difference in quality.
1975 --> Watched 4, Have 3...
1976 --> Watched 4, Have 2...
2011 --> Watched 7, Have 1...

I'd be lying if I said that it didn't hurt my heart to part with the region free Italian disc of Gilda, simply because I do love that film enough to own multiple copies, but it will do me well to save some room in my storage bins.

I also parted ways with my DVD of Hitchcock's The Wrong Man to make way for the Warner Archive Blu-ray release. Woo hoo!
There are some interesting extras on the MGM Blu of The Manchurian Candidate that make me want to keep it alongside the forthcoming Criterion. At least for a while.

I can't get rid of my DVD of The Wrong Man. Actually, I can't get rid of either copy. Both are part of boxed sets. One's in Alfred Hitchcock: The Signature Collection, and the other is in Henry Fonda: The Signature Collection.

Been wanting to see this in the Collection ever since I saw it. Yesterday's viewing in 35mm only furthered that desire. You could tell the audience would just perk up whenever Stanwyck graced the screen.

Also managed to snag this at the concession stand.

Cannes and Berlin etc never feel like a competition and like fight whereas The Oscars feels like a fight to see who is better when every one nominated is great in their own way. Cannes, Berlin etc etc defo feel more like a celebration of cinema which is what The Oscars should be, but its not.

Meh!
Well, but you're comparing two different things. You can't expect a professional organization's awards to compare to how a festival works.

I don't think enough people saw Tree of Life, frankly. Just because some Academy member gets sent a screener doesn't mean that he actually sat down and watched the movie.

How funny, I'm in the same situation when it comes to The Wrong Man! Can't get rid of either copy because I own the same sets you do.

I'll be in a similar pickle if they ever release Advise & Consent on blu-ray, because I have one copy in the Henry Fonda Signature Collection, and another in the Controversial Classics Collection.

RIP to the great Haskell Wexler. One of the all time great DPs (and not a bad director, either.)

Watched Odd Man Out last night and thought it was fantastic.

...really, really good.

Carol Reed was a master of shadows and light.

That homeless guy with the birds is one of the oddest-looking characters I've seen in a long time. Him and his painter friend really cracked me up.

If I have one complaint it's that James Mason wasn't in it enough.

...there were times when he felt like a supporting character.

Great blind buy.

1) You are right, I am just venting and getting myself in a pickle lol - but still.....

2) Hugo was pretty hyped I guess and it had a story that the academy would die for so I can see why it was favoured. Juts a shame, atleast Lubezki is getting recognition from them now.

I have Odd Man Out and Night Train to Munich pulled off the shelf for my next two Criterion viewings. Love film noir, and love The Third man - so expecting to share your opinion of Odd Man Out.

Gotcha.

But I love the Oscars. They're goofy and crazy and all the gowns and the nutso stuff going on -- love it.

Hugo was huge. And let's face it: A movie ABOUT movies by Scorsese? It's going to succeed.

Best part about Oscars is watching Jennifer Lawrence fall over.

I did enjoy Hugo as a film, I loved the themes and subject but it wasn't anything special - it's easy to forget about tbh and other films have touched upon those subject better. But oh well.

Only Scorsese film I have enjoyed was Shutter Island. I have seen a few of his others and they for me, weren't enjoyable or engaging. (might get some hate for this but oh well).

I was just saying that Hugo was always going to be much bigger than some weird Malick flick (which I LOVE by the way).
