There's already an incredible release in the UK, no need for Criterion to do something already wonderfully done

No, I get it. But the import was actually reasonably priced. I can't remember right now what I paid, but it was fairly decently priced. But no, I get it.

It's an amazing release, that comes in either a standard case or Steelbook (both with a slipcase), and a 100 page booklet. The only downside for most N.A. consumers is that it's Region B locked.

Quote:
  • Exclusively restored high-definition master presented in the film’s original aspect ratio, in 1080p on the Blu-ray
  • Presented in both 20fps and 24fps playback speeds
  • Optional audio tracks: a piano score performed by Japanese silent film composer Mie Yanashita (for the 20fps option), and a radical accompaniment by esteemed American avant-garde musician Loren Connors (for the 24fps option)
  • Newly translated optional English subtitles for Dreyer’s original Danish intertitles
  • The complete “Lo Duca” version of the film – the version (featuring an alternate edit and soundtrack) that circulated in France and around the world for decades before the rediscovery of Dreyer’s “director’s cut”
  • A 100-PAGE BOOK containing: Writing on the film by Jean Drum & Dale D. Drum about the film, replete with extensive quotations from Dreyer, Falconetti, and more; a contemporary review of the film by H.D. (the poet Hilda Doolittle); and more
Unboxing (not mine)

Holy.

Well, my New Year's Resolution (which I never make by the way) was to get a Region-Free player. I know have absolutely no choice. That's unbelievably beautiful. Now I just need to find some way to determine what player to get.

I'm thinking about doing the same. I keep running into good versions or the only Blu-Ray version of films that are exclusive to Region B.

Well if you decide on one, let me know. I'm having a hard time choosing.

BTW you can remove both The Kid and The Bicycle Thief from your signature
Thank you very much for the information! Very helpful.

And yes, I definitely need to update my signature.

Usually July at B&N. Criterion should have one around Feb. or March.

My B&N barely has any Criterions, so that sale is pretty much out. I'm going to keep my eye out for Criterion's own sale.

Order from the web site, you can still use the coupons and free shipping if you spend like $50 I think

If you go ahead and become a Barnes & Noble member for $25.00 a year, then you get lots and lots of members-only coupons. Plus if you buy in-store, you get an additional 10% off the price. If you buy online instead, you don't get the additional 10% off, but you do get free "expedited" shipping, with no minimum purchase requirement.

Oh I know but my local B&N doesn't carry much stock in Criterion Blu-Rays and even with the members only discounts, Amazon prices are still cheaper. My B&N sells them at the absolute full price.

I only have 3 Criterion Blu's. I paid $17 or less for each. There is really no reason to buy Criterion when that half price sell isn't active. I'll pick up a few most likely next sale.

But not having a B&N near or if it doesn't carry blus, the next best option is Criterion flash sales if your state doesn't get charged with tax

Around $18 shipped taking in account the 10% that goes to reward points if you buy enough.

Other than that, the best way to buy boxsets is on B&N with their unusual 30% coupon discounts (usually black friday).

And I once got a great deal at TCM ($16 shipped per selected blu) but those are very few and too far between I think.

Always keep an eye out at used stores. I just picked up The Music Room and Anatomy of a Murder for under $20 apiece. People who buy Criterion films generally take very good care of them, and it's difficult to scratch a blu-ray, so you end up with a like-new copy 90% of the time when you buy used.

People who somehow kill their Blu-Ray copy are people who do not deserve to have things.

Careful shoppers can find Criterions for $20 or less BRAND NEW throughout the year.

For example, I recently picked up three brand new Criterion Godard films for less than $20 each (including shipping) on eBay.

I just came from a buy/sell shop and saw a like new copy of The Thin Red Line for $24 and a like new copy of House for $22.

I had $22 in trade to use, but I already own The Thin Red Line and don't have any interest in adding House to my collection.

But, to be honest, I don't often see Criterion blu-rays in used stores.

...it's rare in my town.
