Not much problem, if you are region free you could get even more great stuff, if you are not, then there really isn't much to complain in case they released something only there, since that would mean someone else has the rights here.

No problems. Those releases may be cheaper than Criterions', so it adds another option to the market. This would be great news to region B folks especially.

I'm region free so I don't mind at all, but I've been surprised to see all the Arrow backlash when they've announced US only stuff.

I hope your copy of The Friends of Eddie Coyle gets disc rot.

Oh, thank God. I was so afraid your attitude toward me might change. What a relief to know that we're the same as we ever were. Yes, I'm crying, but they're bright, happy tears ...

Interesting discussion since I just moments ago received my first Region-B Locked Blu-Ray (The Passion of Joan of Arc).

I'm going to agree with those have already said that it probably won't make much of a difference. But of course, being region-free now, I don't have to worry either way.

I actually prefer Seconds myself.

I watched it again the other night and it's definitely one of my favorite Criterions.

...but The Manchurian Candidate is great as well.

I checked out "Classe Tous Risques" last night. Absolutely awesome French crime film. Right on par with Melville's crime films. Belmondo and Ventura are both at the top of their games. The transfer on the DVD looks really solid. I think BFI released a Blu-Ray of it as well. Phenomenal film.

I've still got my Criterion DVD of Classe Tous Risques at home, and I love the movie.

There are so many of these amazing French gangster films that have not made their way from Criterion DVD to Blu-ray. The world is never going to be a decent place until we get a region A Blu-ray of Touchez Pas Au Grisbi.

Of course, we all want Le Samourai, Le Doulos, Bob Le Flambeur, and the other Melville films to be on Blu-ray.

I compare "Top Gun" almost to Paul Verhoeven films like "Starship Troopers" and "Robocop", in that they are brilliantly funny movies for smart people that also work as mindless action movies for dumb people. The Verhoeven movies do it intentionally, not so sure about "TG". But the homoeroticism is so heavy that I have to imagine the filmmakers, particularly the editor, were at least somewhat aware of the subtext.
I'm gonna say this one last time: There is NOTHING homoerotic about Top Gun.

Top Gun is a classic piece of hot, steamy heterosexual Americana.

Dudes flyin airplanes and playing volleyball and banging hot chicks and standing around in the shower room with towels wrapped around their finely sculpted, sweaty chests having existential conversations about the interpersonal relationships between half-naked fighter pilots.

It's probably the most macho film ever made.

Anyone who says otherwise is obviously just projecting their own repressed desires to ride tandem behind Maverick in a small, piping-hot steam room....er...I mean cockpit.

...it's actually kind of sad.

Definitely. "Classe Tous Risques" came out in 2008 from Criterion, so the transfer is very high-end for a DVD. Similar to a low-end Blu-Ray. The Criterion DVDs I really want upgraded are a lot of the early 2000s titles that don't look too great. "The Ruling Class", "The Devil and Daniel Webster", "Secret Honor", "Knife in the Water", just to name a few in my collection. And obviously "Le Samourai" would be incredible as well.

This is easily one of my favorite posts ever on this site.

(Also, one of the most deluded, but that's a different discussion)

But, too many developers are ignoring the principles of design that any first year art student should be well versed in. I suspect that's due in large part to client's unwillingness to keep an open mind. I only spent a year and a half as an advertising art major before switching to political science as my field of study (and I'm completely self-taught as a web dev), but the elements of design were forever hammered into my subconscious, and whenever I see "busy" sites that assault the senses, complete with a litany of plugins slowing the loading time to a crawl, I cringe.

Sadly, this also reminds me that I need to get off my arse, and complete my own site. Jesus, as if I don't have enough to do with all these movies awaiting perusing.
You're a web designer too?

That's great!

Sorry, this posting really caught my eye because I've been doing web design since the year 1996, so this makes it 20 years for me.

I agree completely with what you said about the "clean aesthetics" of having enough white space and not trying to cram in too much information to overload the viewer. I always tend to go with the "less is more" approach, in the tens and tens of websites I've built over the years.

Gotta add, its taken me over 14 years to get my personal website finished and I'm still not done, since I'm watching too many movies and TV series. Try and beat that!

I'd love to see some of your work. If you see this message, please go ahead and PM me. Thanks.

It's a bit pricey at $169.95 (although no tax and free shipping), but it doesn't look like there will be many chances to get them (they only sold 90 in North America initially) and it will go nicely next to your WCF box set(s)

Maybe someone with BBFC surfing skills could find out whether any Criterion material is being rated and by whom.
