But still a good film.

Yes, it was. I was going to bring it up in my own reply to theater dreamer, but was so focused on the Paths of Glory comment, that I deleted the American in Paris comment in trimming the quote.

Wow!! The losses to the music world continue.

RIP Maurice White, founder of Earth,Wind, and Fire, one of my favorite soul-boogie bands since my childhood in the 1970s and late teenage and 20s in the 1980s, has passed. I had every EW&F album at one time....and even a bunch of their 8-tracks for my first truck sound system. Those were the days.

Age 74, same age as Paul Kantner and Signe Anderson last week.

Them, David Bowie, Glenn Frey. One heck of a month for losing great musicians.

Please let this be it for a while...

I've watched bits and pieces of Ken Burns' Baseball and for who knows what reason, it has never really grabbed me.

The 30 for 30 series has produced some incredible films - films that transcend sport and would interest anybody.

Hillsborough is about a tragedy at a playoff soccer match in Sheffield, England in 1989. The fact that this happened within the last 30 years is unbelievable. One of the best in the series.

The Best That Never Was has similarities to Hoop Dreams. I agree w/ mja.. HD is my fav documentary of all-time. TBTNW is also great.

I also saw the Paradise Lost films and think the first film, the umm... the objective one, is incredible. The following films are definitely interesting, but the second one is kind of laughable, really. You'll want to know how the whole thing wraps up, so the third one is essential viewing.
[Show spoiler]I, for one, and I think my wife agrees, don't believe for a second that this three didn't do it.

Herzog's Grizzly Man is a great watch and Into The Abyss is worth one watch. That's all you'll be able to stomach re: the subject matter.

The Imposter is another one of those hard to believe stories, that is really worth checking out.

The King of Kong was a lot of fun, too, on the lighter side of things.

..and of course James Marsh's Man on Wire and Project Nim are really interesting and really well-crafted.

I love a great documentary, so if anyone can recommend something in the vein of the ones I mentioned, I would appreciate it.

The Two Escobars is not only my favorite entry in the 30 for 30 series, but it may be the best sports documentary I've ever seen.

...and I don't even like soccer.

Newbie question here:

I ordered Hidden Fortress a few weeks ago during Amazon's sale, and they've pushed out the shipping date indefinitely now.

Am I out of luck? Did this go out of print?

The Dual Format edition is OOP, and being replaced by a BD only edition coming out on March 29th. The only thing you can try to do is perhaps get Amazon to switch your order to that one and give it to you for the same price.

Yes, it was. Brain fart. I wrote that post as my muscle relaxer was kicking in. Apparently, my brain was a little too relaxed.

The same thing happened to me with Tokyo Story. Best Buy, and then Amazon, put it on sale for $19.99. I jumped in to buy it from Best Buy, and was almost immediately told it was back ordered. After a month, they cancelled my order. I put an order in on Amazon, and three weeks later, it's still out of stock. It seems like both Amazon and Best Buy were making room for the new, Blu-ray only version. I ended up finding the DigiPack version at The Movie Trading company.

Criterion's site doesn't list it as out of print, so you may yet be able to get it directly from them. It's priced at $31.96. Free shipping on orders over $50. Honestly, though, since the dual-format edition is in a Scanavo case, I'm just going to wait for the reissue.

Good luck!

Skipping sideways for a moment, I was sad to see that Joe Alaskey died yesterday. He was the voice of Richard Nixon in Forrest Gump, and Yosemite Sam in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. He was also Mel Blanc's successor in voicing many of the Looney Tunes characters -- his Daffy Duck was almost indistinguishable from Blanc's -- and some of the latter-day WB characters, such as Plucky Duck (in Tiny Toon Adventures) and Duck Dodgers (in his eponymous show).

He was only a year and a half older than me. Sigh.

I ordered three titles from the Amazon "Criterion Japanese films for $16.99" sale. All have gone out separately. Kuroneko came pretty quickly, and Throne of Blood (the BD-only edition) shortly after that. Sword of Doom was originally given an expected arrival date of Feb 1st. On Feb 2nd, Amazon changed that to an expected shipping date of Feb 15th.

Jayembee, I ordered two from that sale. Throne of Blood arrived in a few days. Harakiri, which will be my introduction to Masaki Kobayashi, just came in.

For prices like that, I'm totally not complaining about any wait, especially when they're available to watch on Hulu.

We have a great TV channel here in the UK, BBC 4, which puts out a lot of documentaries. It's one of those channels where you switch it on and there's a documentary about some weird or obscure subject and it draws you in. I came across one about the history of model railways in the UK - I'd seen it in the listings and decided it was not for me and I ended up watching the whole thing. The great bit was that they used the subject as a lens through which they reflected UK 20th century social history.

[Show spoiler]The part where Herzog listens to the tape is a transformative moment. It gives me the shivers even thinking about it.

Non-Criterion but I ordered Malick's Knight of Cups from Germany. I can see this as something I really enjoy.
