I'm watching the five hour television cut of Ingmar Bergman's Fanny and Alexander on Hulu in advance of buying it during the flash sale, and I don't know....either my eyes are failing me, senility is kicking in prematurely at age 44, or maybe I just don't know what to look for when my nose isn't two inches from the screen...but I think this version looks absolutely sensational, especially for something that was shot some thirty-three years ago.

I'm only going to make it an hour in now, as sleep is calling, but what I've seen thus far has allayed any apprehension I might have had about investing in the Blu-ray. I've no doubt that a trained eye will spot things I'd miss, but if that's a "5" picture quality, well, then a "5" is good enough for me.

I doubt the last would be released by Criterion, but hopefully Arrow could release this.

well, the theatrical version seems better, at least from the screenshots (I haven't compared them side by side from the actual bluray which I own) but I guess people don't see this either?

I was scanning the collection for a short, semi-recent, American film to watch with my wife last night and settled on Metropolitan. It was the first Stillman movie I have watched...and the last for a while.

We use contractions in Kentucky and consider enunciation highly overrated. I don't know much about Stillman, but I'm guessing he is not from the south. Seems many have a love-hate relationship with his films based on reviews I read. I could not get past the dialogue to enjoy the movie. I apologize in advance to all the fancy people in this thread.

Let us know how it all turns out. Good luck!
I bought at Barnes and Noble during a sale in Nov I think... But I used Guest Checkout and didn't keep any of the resulting emails. I will try to contact B&N to see if they can find records but I expect them to give me the cold shoulder. I don't live near a B&N.

I hope it works out somehow...

Just for the record...some of us in Kentucky appreciate and even encourage enunciation. (But to be fair, I'm a transplant and have only lived here for 7.5 years)

Has it ever happened to you to watch a film that you don't overall like at that moment but then time passes, days, weeks, months and you think about how good it was?

I mean, not watch it a 2nd time and re-evaluate, but re-evaluating just thinking about the first time you felt you didn't like it..
I think it has happened to me now with the first Ozu I saw:
An Autumn Afternoon

You would probably enjoy Last Days of Disco a lot more. I love that film. But I also love Metropolitan. (I usually watch it near Christmastime.)

I watched The Last Days of Disco last year and couldn't get into it at all. I guess Stillman isn't for me. I don't have any desire to watch the other two films in that trilogy.

That Stillman set is something I've been waiting for a very long time. Beautiful films, filled with beautiful people, and filmed beautifully. I don't know how it gets better than that.

I RELATE to those people. OK, not in the sense that I lived that life, but I understand it perfectly. It's hard to explain. It's a lifestyle that one relates to, or not, I guess. Dammit, I don't even mean that either. Ugh. I wish I could express myself properly.

I'm really interested in what CC does for In a Lonely Place's cover art. My guess is they've commissioned some original art.

This is the closest poster to being suitable for the cover and it's a bit too gaudy:

No new phantom pages up, yet. Will Criterion be more careful to not let the cat slip out of the bag early today/tomorrow/this month?

Here is the last individual page...
