I was born when Jon Mulvaney first emailed me.

I died when yesterday's announcement was made.

...I lived a few weeks while anything seemed possible.

I'm a day late but I had to weigh in with my thoughts on yesterday's announcements.

First off, this is an incredible, incredible month of releases (May 2016).

Criterion/Janus have brought back that original cinephile feeling for me with these releases, and reminded me of why I love the Criterion Collection and movies in the first place.

I am floored, just floored, that we're getting the Wim Wenders: The Road Trilogy in a box set. I am still planning on purchasing the recent release of The American Friend, so this is going to be amazing to have this collection as well.

To continue the minor road theme/travel month, I see a re-release of Easy Rider, one of the great classic indie cinema films of the 1960s (that sparked a new revolution of American independent filmmaking). Since I own the America Lost and Found: The BBS Story already, I'm going to let this one pass.

Shindo's The Naked Island is another glorious addition and I'll be purchasing this film.

The same goes for Robert Altman's 90s classic The Player, which I viewed over 15 years ago in a film class at college. That opening shot, which is 8 minutes and 5 seconds, is one of the greatest tracking shots ever filmed in cinema. Though Brian Depalma is known for long shots like that, this shot belongs to Robert Altman and its the king of all tracking shots.

Last but not least, for film noir fans, we have In A Lonely Place, a fantastic Nicholas Ray film starring Humphrey Bogart at the top of his game.

An amazing month and one that I'll remember for a long time.

I've been on a bit of a film noir kick over the last several months, using mostly suggestions from various posts of yours, Owl. Thanks for that!
Off-topic, just wanted to say I love your avatar. Live at Pompeii, right? That's another music doc I'd like to see in the collection.

I got my copy of The Kid in yesterday, so I'm going to watch it tonight after I finish Fanny and Alexander, and watch All About Eve.

I hope you realize Fanny and Alexander is 5.5 hours long.

So, "In a Lonely Place" is just a remake you're doing with Mulvaney?

Yes, I am aware of that. I started watching it yesterday morning, and I'm about an hour and a half in.

On a good night, I have no problem making it through 5 to 6 hours of film, or slightly more if I'm relatively pain free.

Mulvaney and I have been in an emotionally abusive email relationship for about four years now.

Ever since I decided to go full-on Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption and send him an email a week requesting a blu-ray release of Badlands.

There were some veiled threats made along the way.

Then after Badlands was released I guess he felt like I owed him something and began sending me these rambling, gin-soaked emails in the middle of the night, complaining about work-related stress and asking me what I was wearing.

Some of his language was inappropriate.

After a while I refused to respond and it got even worse.

I had trouble sleeping at night.

There have been many times when I felt like Gloria Grahame to his Humphrey Bogart.

So in a sense what you say is true.

I don't have to wait for the Criterion release of In a Lonely Place.

...I've lived it.

Ray, it sounds like your sequel with Mulvaney could be titled "In an Incomprehensibly Dark, Impossibly Desolate, Curled Up In the Fetal Position While Crying Uncontrollably Place".

I like Louis Malle a lot. I would love to see "The Fire Within" (Le Fou Follet) on Blu-ray from Criterion.

Also, I was just looking at the listing for the new "Bicycle Thieves" Blu-ray and I noticed some language I'm not used to seeing: "New digital restoration (4K on the Blu-ray), with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray." What does "4K on the Blu-ray" mean? Is this different than the usual 4K scan?

I'll be picking up The Player for sure, along with In a Lonely Place (which, I'm horrified to admit, I've never actually seen. ).

I have to think about the Wim Wenders box. See where I stand, financially at the time.
