Limelight is a lot more introspective, and it's more overtly adult-themed, but there are still some laughs by way of the stage shows put on by Chaplin's character.

In a weird way, though, I think that Limelight is probably the better movie of all of the Chaplin titles that I've seen so far, even if it's not as nonstop entertaining on a comedic level. Limelight is on a different playing field altogether, and it deserves a place with some of the best dramas ever made (Citizen Kane, etc.).

Limelight is an excellent film. I would consider it Chaplin's swan song in terms of its acceptance of the end of one era and the start of a new one. The film is very insightful about the meaning of life and putting things in perspective, particularly in the early apartment scenes. Plus, the film also features a cameo by Buster Keaton, the first time the comedians appeared in a film together.

For Chaplin, a great3 movie bookend would be:
City Lights where he sees the talkies as not yet there technologically and goes as far as to make fun of the new "genre" by making a kazoo sound when the mayor says his big speech.

Modern Times: considered one of the best movies ever made, where the only spoken words are pre-recorded

The Great Dictator: Chaplin's first talkie where he speaks directly to the audience

Chaplin's talkies are quite underrated. I quite enjoyed Monsieur Verdoux as well.

Chaplin was too smart and too good to ever make an outright bad movie.

I haven't seen all of Chaplin's films, but I'd rank them thusly:

City Lights
The Gold Rush
Limelight
Modern Times
The Kid
The Great Dictator
The Circus
Monsieur Verdoux

They're all wonderful films, though. Not a bad one in the bunch.

Agreed!
That tight rope scene is a work of genius, one of the funniest in cinematic history.

That's what I told B&N when I paid and they just handed me the one copy. They didn't agree with you.

Great talk about Chaplin, as for the few without mention, it's interesting that one of his first feature films was the straight drama A Woman of Paris, and then at the end he brought back the slapstick humor with A King in New York, and while those films might not be as good as the rest they are still quite good in my opinion and as a whole add up to an incredible final output in full feature films for Chaplin.

Well there is also A Countess from Hong Kong, but that is one I haven't seen and don't think is part of the deal to be released by Criterion.

Your assessment of LImelight is spot on. It is by far my favorite Chaplin film. I absolutely love Chaplin's silent films as well. His film output is simply amazing and I've never been disappointed in any of his films.

Is Criterion planning on releasing any more Chaplin films? I'm guessing A King in New York or The Circus would be good candidates? I'm sensing they might release a Chaplin box set of short films from his early years (1910's).

I think they will release a boxset with the First National shorts since they own the rights for all of those.

For his older stuff Flicker Alley owns all of them, but only the Mutual and Essanay shorts have received blu-ray editions, while the Keystone restorations are DVD only.

I assume you've got the Bergman Sunday night/super early Monday mornings covered then as well?

Also, I see several fabulous Criterion releases are under their Catholic Decency League bannination Thursdays theme too. Last week had two of my personal favourites, Black Narcissus and Design for Living. This Thursday we get M, Breathless, and And God Created Woman.

Hello everyone, I'm back from the dead.
