Its also available in this TCM set. Probably the cheapest way to get it

The DVD can be had as part of this bundle:

https://www.blu-ray.com/dvd/TCM-Grea...oms-DVD/85020/

It really deserves a standalone release with extras, etc.

I was the one that answered Knaldskalle that time. I have a copy that was bundled with the Citizen Kane BD that was offered by Amazon. But I also found a copy in my late sister's DVD collection. She never got into Blu-ray, so she must've been able to buy it somewhere on its own.

Cleaned out my closet of DVDs last night. Came across my copy of Armageddon on Criterion DVD. How did that ever happen again?

Lol. (PS: I do like the movie, but still...)

Yes, it came out by itself a few months after the BD bundle

I noticed Criterion hasn't asked Mike Bay to do a 'Top 10 films in the Criterion Collection' list, as so many filmmakers in the collection are asked to do.

Thanks, everyone, for their thoughts on Black Orpheus. I am definitely in on that title based on your feedback. I love it when a title that I figured I would never own comes out of the woodwork and says, "hey, consider me!" So, thanks to Pedro for bringing it up. I'm near certain that I'll like it.

Re: The Lady From Shanghai.. If you didn't get past 30 minutes, then don't bother.. The plot goes off the cliff w/ convolutedness. If the first 30 didn't get you vested in the characters, you certainly won't care about the unexplainable plot twist after plot twist. I guess it is an exercise in style. I actually thought it was ok to good, but I personally wouldn't put it anywhere near the top of my fav noir list.

Well, Michael Bay loves Michael Bay, so we know two of them.

Michael Bay approached them to do an edition of The Rock on laserdisc, and they did. Two years later, they did the same with Armageddon. The DVD was released a month after the LD, and The Rock was released on DVD a couple of years after that.

Criterion claims that Armageddon is an excellent example of a particular kind of (in my words) "big, dumb, explosion-y action movie". I can't stand the film, myself, but I'm still willing to admit that they put together a hell of a package for it.

Bay's top 5 would probably go...

1. Armageddon
2. The Rock
3. Salo
4. Sweet Movie
5. Tiny Furniture

I'm missing the joke. I've only seen The Rock... The ones other than Armageddon mean nothing to me (except Salo, but I'm not sure why you said that).

It was a joke implying that Bay enjoys movies involving the consumption of feces ("Sweet Movie" and "Salo"). And "Tiny Furniture" because it's a film that I can't imagine would be in anyone's top 10 Criterion titles.

Brings up an interesting question regardless... Member's Top 5 Criterions? Probably happens every week, but I tend to come and stay only if something I'm interested in is in the conversation.
Personally,
1. Repo Man
2. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
3. Brazil
4. Eating Raoul
5. Something Wild

Also have soft spots for Videodrome, Cronos, and Dazed and Confused.

In no particular order

Nashville
8 1/2
Rififi
The 400 Blows
Sweet Smell of Success

Those are probably the 5 I loved most when I first saw them. "Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion", "Days of Heaven", and "Night of the Hunter" would probably be right up there as well.
