You should really watch Close-Up. I think it's his best film on Blu-ray.

I don't know if you guys have seen this (and forgive me for sharing this here, as it's not a Criterion release), but Amazon is selling the 50th Anniversary Box set of West Side Story for $10.99. I already had the movie on Blu-ray, but I jumped all over the box set. It's got a lot of great extras. Those of you that don't already own the film, this is your chance. It truly belongs in every movie collection. If you've never seen West Side Story, you owe it to yourself to see it at least once. It's one of those timeless films that actually gets better with age. The opening overture is composed by the great Leonard Bernstein, and the color graphic that changes into downtown Manhattan was done by artist Saul and Elaine Bass. And the movie, based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, is wonderful. It won 10 of the 11 Academy Awards it was nominated for, including Best Picture.

A few days ago, I was discussing classic film with a friend on another forum I frequent. He told me that his Uncle, George Chakiris, played Bernardo in the movie. Chakiris won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

Here's the opening overture that I alluded to earlier. You don't see things like this in movies today, and it's really too bad.

I didn't care for his other films, but I absolutely love Taste of Cherry (can't believe nobody has mentioned this one). One of my most wanted upgrades.

A Taste of Cherry
The Wind Will Carry Us

He is one of my favorite directors now, although I was a bit disappointed the 'The Wind Will Carry Us'

My criterion related activities was limited to 2 things today

1) I watched Yi Yi
2) I ordered (won an auction actually @ ebay) A Brighter Summer Day. I used a $10 off coupon that my wife received for not using her ebay account, so it was only some $10.xx, one of the Brighter Spring Day

I haven't seen Klute in 25 years at least? That goes back to another time.

Forget the five hour version, he's lived this one.

I liked how he contrasted
[Show spoiler]the old culture with the new culture.
However, I found his execution dull and, as a whole, was disappointed with the final product.

Got it for a similar price last Black Friday. It was a blind-buy for me, to help beef up my musical collection (Fiddler on the Roof was $5 at the time too, and I decided to go ahead and grab a few others I was always on the fence about). It is a pretty slick film, I'm glad to have it. And the 3-disc Blu-Ray edition is phenomenal.

I bought it last month. It's a great deal at that price. I gave my old copy away at work to boost my karma points!

I would like to buy it but I don't unless they correct the colors in the overture.
I know it's a minor thing but it bugs me.
I assume this edition could be the first wrong version and not the second "less wrong" version.

I was in the mood for something slow, low-key and relaxing. Hirokazu Kore-eda's Still Walking is the account of a hot summer day where three generations of the Yokohama family comes together to commemorate the passing of the eldest son Junpei 15 years prior.

Still Walking relies on simple gestures, domestic routines and chores, the pleasures in cooking and conversation. The pacing is decidedly relaxed and the original score by Gontini is gentle and soothing. A greatly rewarding film in its naturalism and realistic depictions of daily life. This viewing was a revisit and I look forward to more viewings in the future.

PS - I recommend having a meal ready as you sit down to watch this film. The dishes the mother cooks look incredibly delicious (Especially the fried sweet corn).
