Excuse me. Hugo was a lackluster CGI mess and while Wolf was maybe his best film in a while, it doesn't hold a candle to his work in the 70s and 80s. It just felt like Casino 2. I love Scorsese but I would never watch Hugo again. One of his 5 worst films, easily.

That might change though if someone decides to release After Hours, seems like a long shot for Criterion but would be happy it comes from anyone at this point. |

On Malick,
It will be interesting to see if any thematic links exist between To the Wonder, Knight of Cups, and the upcoming Weightless. Since they are all releasing so close together (espically close together considering Malick) I wonder if the intent was any kind of informal trilogy. Having seen 2/3 nothing obvious is coming to mind but final call will come after Weightless. (That film features Rooney Mara and Ryan baby goose Gosling, who are both insanely beautiful, and will be a dream in Malick's visuals, so hype level 10 already) |

I should have added in my post above that Spielberg and Scorsese have a better collective 21st century output than Malick. Yeah, TToL is special, but it would bother me if I were a fan that he is going deeper and deeper into the type of Malick-isms, if you will, that make his films uninteresting rather than the ones that made some of his past work great.

This was long ago, was probably 18-19 at the time so I have been meaning to watch his greatest hits a second time, but haven't found time to do so. To be clear I also liked most of the others just not on the same level, specially Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, Taxi Driver, The Last Temptation of Christ, Goodfellas, The Age of Innocence and Casino, it will be interesting to see how my appreciation of his movies has changed if at all. |

Tree of Life dealt with Malick's childhood, to an extent. To the Wonder dealt with his love affair in France, to an extent. Knight of Cups dealt with his brother's death, to an extent. It's interesting how his last three films have dealt with very significant aspects of his personal life. However, to me, only Knight was unsuccessful in establishing an actual and thematic purpose. |

Malick fans might enjoy reading Willa Cather's "O! Pioneers" and "My Antonia." I've read them and think Malick may have, too. He had a small part in "Badlands" and definitely sounded like a Midwesterner. Those two novels are about immigrants surviving on the great plains during the 19th century, and are full of the sort of images and stories Malick seems to enjoy. Your own imagination can be better than the movies.

As much as I like Terrence Malick's copious output of films in the last 5 years, I really hope he takes a bit of time off before he makes his next movie (which he's already doing now with Weightless - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weightless_(film)). Look at what we got in 1998 after nearly 20 years without a film? One of the greatest anti-war movies of all time: The Thin Red Line.

I actually watched about an hour of To The Wonder last night on Netflix--I had never seen it before.
As with every Malick film, there's some really beautiful imagery in it. What I saw, I liked more than I thought I would based on every thing I'd read and heard about it. But it still struck me as a lesser version of The Tree of Life. It has the same basic form and narrative style, but the story isn't as engrossing and it doesn't do for the concept of love what Tree of Life did for the exploration of life, death and childhood imo. There were moments when it felt like a bad Zoolander parody of a Calvin Klein commercial. I plan to finish the rest of it tonight. |
