God I am getting old. I have watched Alan Arkin films over the years and picture him still looking like....Alan Arkin. The Russians are Coming! The Russians are Coming! is one I watched a month ago. I tend to forget that age and receding hairlines have taken their toll on the male stars of yesteryear. I can't look at that photo without mentally attaching a black toupe to that bald noggin. His face is still Alan Arkin, but the bald head is freakin me out.

Which reminds me we need Criterion to wrangle the rights to Catch-22 away from Paramount. That is one deliciously satirical and perceptive film that belongs in the Criterion Collection.

Wild Side Video in France will be releasing Akira Kurosawa's The Lower Depths (Donzoko), and The Bad Sleep Well (Warui yatsu hodo yoku nemuru) starring Toshiro Mifune among others. Two of Kurosawa's most underrated films in my opinion. They're sourced from a new restoration apparently. I really hope Criterion gets around to releasing them one day

Reminds me of a road trip to LA many, many years ago. Frozen wheel bearing just outside Denver necessitated a layover. Met this beautiful young lady while stranded w/o wheels. Come with me to Boulder she said, we'll spend the day, meet some others, and take an old woody up to a cabin in the mountains. I was sure it was love. There was some kind of commotion at the university in Boulder, didn't really notice because I only had eyes for her. Sometime later that evening I remember lots of lights, spot lights, blue and red flashing lights, lots of angry men in various uniforms.

That's him, that's who you want, he was the one who started the riot, she said. It was many weeks later before they were done with me. It wasn't fun Ray and there weren't any found memories.

I do think of her at times, not that I can remember her face anymore. I remember the betrayal, the humiliation they put me through. After awhile I was thankful to earn solitary confinement. But you probably know how even that can be a blessing.

It was no Hiroshima Mon Amour for me.

Okay, okay, I can tell you one quick story.

It happened in Munich, Germany one late Spring (no pun intended) afternoon. Yes, for me it was "Munich mon amour". It was late May 2014. She was a Slovakian woman. She was living in Zurich, Switzerland at the time. She and I spent 24 lovely hours together in Munich. The only catch is this, I had already talked to her online before we met up. So it wasn't quite as random. I'd rename it "Munich by way of internet mon amour".

One thing I had in common with the Alain Resnais' film was both romances took place in Axis countries. Mine was in Germany, his film's characters met in Japan.

I won't guess as to Criterion's releases this month. All I will say is that I sincerely hope that we receive one great film from their own catalog upgraded to Blu-ray. I understand that restorative work is expensive, but there are so many great works of art that deserve this treatment, and I am hoping that some of the recent films that Criterion have released/announced (The Graduate and Dr. Strangelove being two) will create the necessary cash flow that they can reinvest in some of the cinematic masterpieces that are waiting their special treatment.

Jeanne Dielman is probably at the top of my want list right now, and there is no Blu-ray release for that film. I know it is available to stream, and I've been holding out hope for a Blu-ray release that I can buy, because I much prefer to watch a film from physical media if I can.

My dream month right now would probably look something like this:

Chantal Akerman's Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles
Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel
Roman Polanski's The Pianist
Michael Apted's Up Series box set.

And then, one of the following:
Andrei Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev
or, one of the remaining films from the Olivier's Shakespeare box set, Hamlet or Henry V

We all know Criterion loves Wes Anderson, and of the films I've seen from him to date, Budapest is by far my favorite. The Fox release is quite nice, but it's lacking in extras. Properly loaded, it could be a cash cow for Criterion.

The Up Series documentary intrigues me. It seems right up Criterion's alley. All the other films, save for Dielman, have existing high definition transfers, though I don't know how good the Rublev remaster is, quality wise. Artificial Eye in England is releasing the film on April 25th, so here's hoping that it's a strong issue, and that Criterion can get distribution rights to it, as well.

I'm going to keep hoping for The Pianist until either Criterion does it, or I drop dead.

Review is up! I've been anxious to revisit this film ever since I saw it on the big screen several years ago.

Criterion have been on schedule when it comes to the announcements on the 15th over the recent months, which makes me fear that they're due for an announcement skip. Which would especially suck this time around because of the weekend.

I noticed they released a non-english friendly release of Stray Dog last March as well. Probably the same issue for these two titles as well.

Yeah none are English-friendly unfortunately. They come in nice looking Digibooks too. They have one for Ikiru and a few other earlier films of his too.

He just means announcing on the 15th every month, which they haven't been doing as consistently as the past.

I know. I was attempting to poke fun at the way people conjure up a "schedule" in their head and then get irritated when Criterion doesn't meet the criteria of their creation.

As I say every month, I'm hoping for The Virgin Spring. It's been quite a while since the last Bergman, hasn't it? Cries and Whispers was March 2015.

Schedule = a list of planned activities or things to be done showing the times or dates when they are intended to happen or be done
http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dict...glish/schedule

Now, the schedule can be an official one (in writing) and an unofficial one.
it just happens that Criterion's was an unofficial one.
But I still consider it a schedule when it has been going on for years (I think?)

My post doesn't mean that I'm vastly irritated when they don't announce on the 15th.
I just wanted to make some observations on semantics.
In my view (maybe someone who studies semantics knows better), something that gets repeated in the exact same date for a large period of time, becomes a "schedule", even if it hasn't been publically and officially announced.

eg. I go to work every day at 8.15.
Today i went at 10.00. I was behind schedule.
(of course I hadn't notified anyone in writing, that I go to work every day at 8.15)

*behind schedule
having failed to do something by the appointed time, especially the time given on a written plan
http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/behind+schedule

It does say "especially". Not "necessarily".

That's all for today.

Sure, but the unofficial one gets defined different ways by different people and none of these schedules are verified by Criterion, yet people still hold them accountable for their individually devised version.

Person A thinks "Criterion announces new titles on the 15th of every month".
Person B thinks "Criterion announces new titles on a non holiday weekday, somewhere between the 14-19th of every month".

For Person A Criterion is frequently "late". For Person B, Criterion probably has a perfect record.

The only difference is each person's personally created criteria for the "schedule".

(This isn't a criticism of you Filmmusic, just an observation based on what this place looks like when the 15th passes without announcements being made.)

Well, the thing I have understood by Criterion announcements, is that Criterion announces on the 15th of every month.
If that date happens to be a holiday, or weekend, it announces it in the very next working day.

So, I'm person C!
