Plenty of people dislike them for being too mainstream/populist. Shawshank's ending is widely hated even among fans of the film.

I just mentioned "The Wages of Fear" jokingly to iScottie because he said he wasn't a big fan of it a few days ago.

Most of Keaton's catalog is with Kino. I own a few of them ("The General", "College", "Go West"/"The Battling Butler") and they're nice releases. Need to pick up "Steamboat Bill Jr." at some point as well. Definitely wouldn't hesitate to pick them up if you're a fan. Kino also released a huge box set with all of their Keaton films.

Based on Imdb ratings, there are at least 30,000 users that really hate Shawshank and gave it 1/10 , or maybe they just want some other movie to become the #1 rated

But there are also 1,000+ users that seem to love Uwe Boll's House of the Dead which is my most hated movie I have ever had the displeasure to watch

I was wondering the same thing as I watched Sherlock, Jr. tonight. Seems odd that two of the big three silent movie comedians are in the collection, but not Keaton.

To be fair, Keno did an excellent job with this release I'm watching now. The two extras are quite informative.

Furthermore if they ever get re-released it would most likely will be via Cohen Film Collection since they are the ones working on new restorations of some of his films.

Huh. The reason why I chose those two films is that my friends and I have seen the films, and we all can't think anything bad about it. We even went to teachers and they said they like those films a lot, and some other students in our school love the films as well.

These two films show how inconsistent I am in the movies I like, especially around melodrama and sentimentality. I absolutely love the late silent films of of someone like Borzage; Seventh Heaven, Street Angel, Lucky Star destroy me every time I watch them.

But then I watch The Shawshank Redemption or Good Will Hunting, and I find myself rolling my eyes and moaning in front of the screen.

All these movies use exactly the same appeal -- melodrama and sentimentality. But when Borzage does it, I respond. When Darabont does it, I get knocked out of the movie.

I guess there really is no Why.

The Shawshank Redemption is one of my all-time favorite films. It was actually my number one film for many years, but it's been dethroned during the past decade. I like the way that Frank Darabont simply lets the story tell itself without cinematic flourishes. I don't think that the movie is overwrought or sappy, and I also believe that the conclusion is well-earned.

Sometimes, the masses are right.

When is July 5th going to get here? Seriously, this month is crawling along.

I'm getting my B&N sale list narrowed down pretty nicely. Here's where I'm at, thus far:

John Cassavetes: Five Films
3 Films By Roberto Rossellini Starring Ingrid Bergman

La Jetée/Sans Soleil - Chris Marker
In The Mood For Love - Wong Kar-wai
Bicycle Thieves - Vittorio De Sica
Wings of Desire - Wim Wenders

I'm looking at one, maybe two others from Insomnia, Day For Night, Late Spring, The Red Shoes, Safety Last, or The Wages of Fear.

I'll own them all, eventually; it's all about the sequencing, which drives me mad. Barnes & Noble doesn't sell the Classic Hitchcock set, so I'll get that at the next Flash sale.

I didn't dislike it necessarily, but I didn't really care for it or think it was very good. It's tough to care what happens to the characters, as they're all unlikeable.

That's about how I feel about both of those films. I think there are plenty of films about friendship, revenge, prison, and wrongly accused men that do it a lot better than Shawshank.

Shawshank Redemption is one of my top ten films of the 90s. Good Will Hunting on the hand is solid but not one of my favorites though I know alot of people who love it.

Robin Williams' performance in Good Will Hunting is the main reason why I like the film.

And The Shawshank Redemption is an excellent film. I don't see how anyone can't have a smile on their face by the end of the film.
