Regarding possible future releases: I hope the
[Show spoiler]Harmony Korine phantom page means a release for Gummo is in the works!

Would not be surprised if Criterion got the rights to
[Show spoiler]Hedwig and the Angry Inch
since the current dvd is oop.

It's been years since I have been suggesting Criterion
[Show spoiler]Hedwig and the Angry Inch
hopefully it comes true, the other day I was watching
[Show spoiler]Velvet Goldmine
and was constantly thinking of this movie and how much better it was.

Don't let anyone discourage you. This is just a website. Think of all the people who are friendly with you (like me, or theater dreamer or Great Owl, etc.). Think of all the good things, not the bad things, that make movie discussion, collecting and viewing some of the best things in life.

And omg I cant believe I wasn't there for A VOYAGE OF TIME TRAILER !!!!

Had to watch and get hyper all aloneeeeeee

A couple observations:
[Show spoiler]
  • Both Howard Hughes (from last month’s phantom pages) and James Whale are associated with Hell’s Angels.
  • Jack Arnold (from last month), Tod Browning, and James Whale have all directed classic monster movies – possible box set? It'd be perfect for Halloween/October announcements...
I wouldn't be surprised if
[Show spoiler]Frankenstein
was released as Criterion posted this on Twitter:

That "Get 25% Off $100 or more" coupon arriving on the 12th will be mine, especially as The New World is already eligible for the sale

(Did something change - I thought items only got the sale price on release date, but TNW is half price already?)

Going through Mikio Naruse's filmography breaks my heart. There's so little of it available on disc. I realise it doesn't help matters, but I'm not interested in the silent Naruse set (I'm a silent film fan. The movies in that set just don't appeal to me...). I'm interested in the movies he made from the 50's onwards.

I wish Criterion would just release what's available from his later career in a few eclipse sets. I would obviously like it on bluray, but if the HD masters don't exist, at this point I'll happily take Late Naruse: Vol 1 and Late Naruse Vol 2, or Mikio Naruse in the 50's and Mikio Naruse in the 60's, barebones and with those fabulous liner notes (I genuinely love those).

SOMETHING, Criterion. For heavens sake.

Went to my local B&N yesterday and picked up the following:
David Lean Directs Noël Coward box (for 35.99 with membership and coupon)
Fantastic Planet
Only Angels Have Wings
Picnic at Hanging Rock
La chienne (I felt bad because I struck up a lovely conversation with a fellow film lover who told me he was looking for La chienne and couldn't find it and I didn't have the heart to tell him I was holding it in my stack)
Tess (a complete blind buy for me, last minute impulse)
A Night to Remember
Bicycle Thieves
Here Comes Mr. Jordan
Gilda
All That Heaven Allows
Bigger Than Life

[Show spoiler]Back in the day, Criterion released a Laserdisc set with all three versions of Show Boat: 1929 silent/talkie (Harry A. Pollard), 1936 (James Whale) and 1951 (George Sidney). There's been talk of Warner releasing all three but nothing has happened yet. This would be a day one buy for me if Criterion were to release it on blu.

note: I think it's silly to spoiler-ize what is basically speculation, but whatever.

How the West Was Won, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Bad Seed, Viva Las Vegas, The Brave One and Little Ceasar already have releases. Doubtful Criterion would double dip on any of these. Bye Bye Birdie already had a Twilight Release, I don't think Criterion would bother with it at this point.

I would guess these would be:

Frank Tuttle: I agree with This Gun For Hire or/and The Glass Key
George Marshall: I would guess maybe Destry Rides Again
Todd Browning: I agree with Freaks
Harmony Korine: I would guess Gummo
John Cameron Mitchell: I agree with either Hedwig or Shortbus
Raoul Walsh: Perhaps The Roaring Twenties, High Sierra or They Died with Their Boots On
Irving Rapper: I agree with Now Voyager or maybe High Sierra
George Sidney: Showboat (1951)
George Stevens: I agree with A Place in the Sun
James Whale: I'd say Showboat (1936)

I'm removing the spoiler tags, as I wouldn't put spoiler tags around my response, and I'd give it all away anyway.

Actually, Criterion didn't do that. Criterion released two editions (CAV and CLV) of only the 1936 version. The CAV edition also included excerpts from the 1929 version.

There was a Complete Show Boat released on LD, but it was from MGM/UA, not Criterion. In addition to the three versions of the film, it also has the Show Boat sequence from the 1946 film Till the Clouds Roll By.

Thanks, I guess I conflated the Criterion release with the MGM release. I'd still love to see a Criterion release.

I'd love to see it from Criterion, too. But I'd be good with Warner Archive, as well. Whale's 1936 version is one absolutely terrific film. The Criterion LD was my first time seeing the film.

Fair, I know some are (understandably) sensitive about phantom pages around the 15th though. Rather play it safe!
