I believe before it was released it was edited to an R from an NC-17 cut. Plus, his piece "The Diary of Anne Frank II" consists of actors from this. It would be great if he gave the ok to release it, but it is projected using multiple screens so that could be tough. Or it could be an option of split screen style or viewing one at a time. Who knows though..well besides Criterion. |

I just don't see Criterion, or anybody else ever getting the rights to distribute Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, or Dracula. Universal would never give up rights to their classic horror films. Those three films, specifically, are as closely associated with Universal as any films in their catalog.

I'm a few days late here, but wanted to give a short eulogy for a director whose films have a special place in my collection and in my heart and this shout out is for Michael Cimino.
Heaven's Gate was THE film that opened up the floodgates for me and my love for this web site, this thread, and for the Criterion Collection. It is exactly the type of film I love to see get supported by Criterion - a redemption story for a wonderful director who, IMO, got the short end of the stick. It is a very special film - Ambitious (w/ a capital A,) and heartfelt. At times its flaws are glaring and at times it is pure movie magic. The attention to detail is unmatched by any other period drama I can recall - the cinematography, costumes, set design, and score are all perfection. If you haven't seen Heaven's Gate, give it a try and remember that it is an art film that happened to have been made for a large studio. Cimino is, to me, the Montgomery Clift of film directors - not quite as pretty, but with a career in film that seemed to end too abruptly and almost as tragically. Thank you for The Deer Hunter and for Heaven's Gate. Rest in peace. ![]() ![]() |

Absolutely agree. I also watched Velvet Goldmine just last week. I had a bit of a Todd Haynes marathon spurred by rewatching Carol.

The greatest thing about having a movie collection (... considering that you have power, a blu-ray player, a blu-ray disc and the time) ... is that you can watch any movie in your collection at any time you want to, no matter how many times you've seen it before. With that in mind, I'm about to watch A Hard Day's Night for the umpteenth time ... on the anniversary of when Paul and John first met (July 6th, 1957). Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
